What timeframes does everyone test at before and after injections? Right before and an hour after, or sooner/later? Feeding how long after injection, if thats whats working for folks...didnt really get that imput from my vet, and she didnt say anything about testing him, just bring him next week for a curve....

Thanks!

Two hours before the morning shot and no food at that time then 7 hours after the morning shot and evening no food two hours before so can test then shot. 12 hours between shots. Vetsulin works differently though it doesnt stay in the system as long as lantus does.

Your signature says you're using Vetsulin

With that insulin, since it hits "hard and fast", it's important that Cooter eat a decent size meal 20-30 minutes before the shot, so you'd want to take food up for the 2 hours before, then Test and feed.....then shoot about 20-30 minutes later

After that, I'd get a +2 to see how he's doing and then go from there. Vetsulin isn't a great insulin for most cats (although some do OK) but it tends to hit hard and wear off well before the next shot time

Vetsulin, he was just diagnosed yesterday and that is what my vet gave us. 1 unit twice a day to start, I do see some improvement in his disposition today, but not sure if its the insulin or an infection he's been fighting clearing up....

My cat started out on vetsulin 1 unit twice a day and clavamax twice a day for the infection. After the first week my vet said to increase from 1 unit to 2 units. The entire time the insulin wore off very quick and he spent most of his time in one spot on the floor by the water bowl and not far from the litterbox.
I would monitor it closely.

Thanks Scooby, I will definately watch him close. This is a little bit of a crazy balancing act right now with some other issues he has going on. He received a antibiotic injection in February and the vet must have caught a nerve because when he got out of the carrier at home he couldnt use his back right leg. No feeling in it still from the second joint to the toes. He's been knuckling and has gotten a very bad infection in his nail bed which we are trying to clear up, his poor paw is so swollen. I'm hoping this is causing some of the elevation in his BG, its got to be stressing him to some extent. I actually found a area in the main website here that makes me wonder if the whole leg thing may have started due to diabetes. His BG was 296 that day at the vet...

Sorry to hear about Cooter's leg problem and his sore paw. :( With the infection in the mix you need to be a bit more vigilant about testing. As the infection clears Cooter's BG levels may go lower as a consequence and his insulin dose may therefore need to be reduced.

Sending some get better soon vibes to the patient and some :bighug:s for you.
