Good morning all! Today was my first time giving Cooter an insulin shot, I was very nervous this morning, but it really was not bad, I was the weak link in the process, Cooter just layed there enjoying the "petting" as I tried to find some skin under his coat lol. Does anyone keep their kitties injection areas shaved down a little? I was considering doing that since he has very thick fur! I took the day off so I can keep an eye on him, but did a quick run to walmart. I picked up a relion micro meter, and just got done sucessfully using it, well, kinda! I messed up the first strip, but the second read 337. he had 1 unit of vetsulin at 615 this morning, and ate about an ounce of Iams perfect delights turkey-lation (it works well to hide the Antibiotic he takes for another week) right before. I am stuck using mostly my phone, and occasionally a tablet. trying to get the spreadsheet set up on the tablet still. I had to use his paw for the test, I could not get his ear to work yet... I forgot to get bigger lancets, and only had the 30g that came with the meter... any feedback is appreciated!

First, Welcome and congrats Sarah, on doing the first injection! The first time is the scariest! My kitty has thick fur also but I have not had a spot shaved as I switch sites frequently. Others here have done this however.

It's great that you tested with his paw and got blood with a 30 gauge lancet! That's the hardest place for me because the skin is thicker and tougher for me. But I do use the pad from time to time to give the ears a break. I have to use a 26 gauge lancet for this and the lancing device! You might pick up the 28 gauge lancets on your next Walmart run. It would be somewhat easier to get blood from the ear until the ear gets used to this and bleeds easily. That does happen, truly. On the ears, I am using the 33 gauge lancets. I can't give any dosing advice or how to edit on the phone or tablet, but I just wanted to tell you congrats and that you have done awesome!

Has anyone seen this yet? would it be a decent substitute for Karo syrup in an emergency?

Not with the flavorings in it Sarah...pancake syrup would be better. Plain yogurt, vanilla ice cream too..good thought tho'!

CONGRATULATIONS on the first shot - sounds like it went well.

Welcome, Sarah, to yourself and Cooter. Congratulations on your successful test and injection. You now have now achieved the Vampire Kitteh Seal of Approval!

lol vampire kitty is what I called one of my cats before. I had to give him away because he was diagnosed with IBS and I couldnt afford the care and also couldnt have him around my daughter while trying to get his bathroom stuff under control. But he had elongated front teeth that didnt fit his mouth and they stuck down and made him look just like this pic when he was that size lol. I miss him :(

I love the vampire kitty! Testing went much easier today, excluding at 530 this morning (but what does go easy at 530am?)..... His numbers AMPS, at +10 and PMPS were too high for the ReliOn micro which only goes to 600. Funnily enough it reads "HI" when this happens and I so hoped it was just being friendly this morning. I got a bunch of cans of FF off the Dr. Lisa list and will be trying to wean him off the dry a bit this weekend. I can not stop free feeding dry as i have a large household of seniors with other issues and I dont want to upset the balance with them. Cooter has never been a huge eater until this started and I am hoping if I feed him the FF spaced out into a few meals it will diminish his dry intake. Luckily I am off weekends so can test this theory starting tomorow. On a high note, I got a bead of blood from his ear on the first stick on his last test!
