The information is the link was based on dry -matter information from the food manufacturers.
The calculators only give you a rough idea since the usual published information is the guaranteed analysis, not typical dry-matter basis

Using the calculator and the Guaranteed Analysis from the Fancy Feast site, the dry matter carbs for the Seafood Feast come in at 13% (bottom right box on the calculator). But the important thing is actually calories from carbs. Fancy Feast don't seem to give a calorie count, but the calculator figures it at 65 calories per 100g with 9 of those calories coming from carbs. Which makes the calories from carbs 13.85%. Which would make it a medium-carb rather than a low-carb option. That said, the catinfo.org chart is based on as-fed values rather than Guaranteed Analysis values so is going to be significantly more accurate with the 16%.
 
ok but with even some of the classics they come in medium also?cant find the info on special kitty so maybe that's even a medium?
 
The classic pates, using the catinfo.org (so the as-fed values rather than the guaranteed analysis) are all under 5%. Special kitty isn't on that list at all, but if you can get the manufacturer to provide you with as-fed values, it's fairly easy to calculate. I haven't done any real research on either brand recently as I had to go low-phosphorus as well which rules out brands like Fancy Feast, but if you can get hold of some as-fed values, I'd be happy to help you calculate the calories from carbs for them.
 
ok so now im lost i used the calculater online and even special kitty comes in at 12-15 carbs and all my fancy feasts and most of the classics even come in high?only seems the chicken classic is 5%.so should i not pay this much attention to the numbers or am i looking at it to much and just feed him a good food hell eat thats a pate if possible?
 
I tried looking up the Special Kitty foods, but information on them seems to be fairly scarce. Short of me going to our local Walmart and reading the can for every individual flavor, if you have some examples of flavor and guaranteed analysis or as-fed values, I can certainly take a look at those for you. As far as I know their pates should be under 10% calories from carbs, but if you're feeding anything other than pate, it's likely to be over 10%. The Fancy Feast Classic Pates are definitely not high in calories from carbs - all under 5%, so I'm not sure what's going wrong when you're calculating them but you're definitely getting different numbers from the ones that others get from running the same calculations.

ETA: No, you're definitely not over-thinking this. Controlling the carbs is essential for getting good BG control for our cats.

I found Special Kitty to be nutritionally deficient for my cats. In the short while we tried it they lost more weight than I was comfortable with. It also had profoundly negative impacts on my IBD kitty. But ECID, and you may have great luck with it, I know many people have!
 
Oh, that is useful - thank you! :) I can't use Special Kitty for Rosa as the phosphorus is much too high for her which is why I'd have had to go to Walmart to look it up, but that gives the percentages very clearly. :)
 
Lol, one of the reasons I tried Special Kitty was because the phosphorus in the Mixed Grill was so much lower than the Fancy Feast I had been feeding before. I am now feeding Wellness; the phosphorus is higher than I like but still less than FF, so I accept the compromise!
 
The Mixed Grill would actually just about work for Rosa if it turned out to be the only thing she'd eat - our absolute upper limit is 200mg/100g. I prefer to keep it a little lower where possible though - her phosphorus level goes sky high way too easily.

It's SO hard to find an affordable, good food low in both carbs and phosphorus. Squallie is extremely carb-sensitive, and his BG will spike very easily.

Rosa, fortunately, is a little less carb sensitive. She's pretty good up to around 11% carbs, though I try to stay under 10% for her the majority of the time. The phosphorus is another story with her - it will sometimes spike for no obvious reason even when I don't change her food at all. It really does only seem to be the premium foods that work for both with an occasional exception...I give our lot 9 Lives Tuna and Egg just once in a while but that's about the only one that comes in at a reasonable price.

When comparing the carb content of food we are comparing the percentage of calories from carbohydrate.
This can be calculated using either the dry matter percentages or the wet 'as fed' percentages . You just have to be consistent and use either all dry matter percentages or all wet matter percentages. :)
