Hi all, this is probably posted somewhere on this site, so forgive me, but is there a list somewhere of low carb/diabetic friendly treats? Thank you in advance! Spike's mom

I've only read about baked- boiled chicken on this site. There's hardly ever chicken here so that doesn't help us much but it may help you.... For more exerienced caregivers, How about steamed fish?

How about steamed fish?

any pure protein is fine for a snack but be careful with how much fish...it's high in phosphorus and due to all the pollution in the world, it can be high in contaminants like mercury....it might be at "acceptable levels" for sale to humans, but our kitties are much smaller than we are

We recommend keeping fish to no more than once or twice a week

Some people also give their cats a tiny bit of cheese or plain yogurt.
These are not 'carb free' as they contain lactose. But we are only talking about a tiny amount here, used as a reward treat. And since you're testing, you'll soon pick up how they affect your kitty's BG level (if at all...)

I'm sure there's someone here who gave their kitty shrimp as a test reward.

In the early days of testing, when we're trying to get the kitty used to the process (or even to like it ;) ) I think it's OK to not stress tooooo much about whether a treat contains a little bit of carb, or indeed, whether it's a fish treat (knowing that fish should be limited in the diet). Let's just get them on board with testing, and we can refine the choice of treats later.... (Just my 'ten cents'....)
And some cats end up being just fine with no food reward at all. Some are happy with a cuddle or a little grooming session.
....And there may even come a day when you can test your kitty in his sleep... :cat:
.

does anyone know if "purely Fancy feast" chicken or tuna is low carbs? TIA.

All the "Purely Fancy Feast" flavors are low carb and ok to feed. They are the same as the former "Appetizer" line, except they added a few nutrients so they could be fed as a complete meal instead of just as a supplementary treat. I still use them as a treats for my cats, along with various freeze dried salmon and chicken treats (Halo Liv-a-littles), and orijen cat treats.
