We are moving in about a month and I'm wanting to get my girls on flea meds especially miss kitty my diabetic cat since she has such a horrible flea allergy.what is the best?vets office was recommending the flea pill is it any good and does it have any bad side effects that anyone knows of?

What flea pill? Capstar kills fleas relatively fast but only lasts a day or so. There are other oral flea meds that lat for a month or so.

I know there are oral flea control for dogs. What brands work in cats? I had a bad flea infestation last year and thought that I would never get rid of them.

The only flea product I have ever found to work effectively is Revolution. I live in a very rural area and fleas are always a major problem, even though my cats never set foot outdoors. Once I started Revolution I never had any more flea problems; it's been about eight years, now, that we have been completely flea-free! It also has wormer in it, so it does double duty to protect your kitties. :)

ETA: Revolution is available only by Rx in the US, and is a topical application. I buy mine from Australia, it's a bit cheaper, and no Rx needed!

The one the vet offered was one that lasted a month and it was taken orally.im very worried about her.the flea only needs to bit her once and she will have a huge red welt so if flea med takes a bit to kill off the fleas then she still will have her allergic reaction to them.i don't know what to do.last time she got fleas on her when I moved into a place that had fleas left behind and she was bald from chest back except for her tail and her skin was raw and full of oozing bleeding sores that she wouldn't stop licking cause they itched.i finally got rid of the fleas and got her better but it was a battle.:arghh:

Dear Cat Girl,
have you ever heard of DIATOMACEOUS EARTH?
It is a 100 percent natural powder without any side effects whatsoever and very easy to use. You just dust your kitty with it and also your home. It kills fleas by suffocating them. This is the only product I would use on my animals as it is non-toxic and works brilliantly. People use it to treat mites in chickens. Please do your research on internet if you interested. You can buy it cheaply in bulk, transfer some into a shaker bottle and voila! Just make sure that you purchase food grade stuff not swimming pool product. Last year I only treated my animals and my home twice and I didn't have any fleas. Highly recommend. If you have more questions about it I'll be happy to provide more information.

While diatomaceous earth can be helpful, it does have possible side effects. It is the exoskeletons (outer skeletons) of diatoms, and is sharp. This means you need to avoid inhaling it, or having your cats inhale it as it may cause irritation.

We use Advantage II on the cats here and haven't had a problem with it. The only change we make with the dosing is that, although 2 of the 3 cats run somewhere around the 10 lb mark (our housemate's 2 are much bigger but he uses Frontline on them), we use the dose for small cats (up to 9 lb). Rosa, of course, has health issues so we want to minimize her dose and her twin, Regan, is allergic to Frontline so we try to minimize the risk of a reaction to the Advantage as well for her. Licorice is a smaller cat anyway so the small dose is the correct one for her. We've had no problem getting rid of any fleas that show up with the slightly reduced dose and we haven't seen any issues arising from using a 'chemical' treatment (I hesitate to use the term chemical because technically everything is a chemical, but it seems to be the term that many people understand best) on Rosa either.

Thanks so much for the replies!usually I do all natural with my girls by flea combing every day sometimes 2times a day when we move in a place til the fleas are completely gone.i comb them every now and then to check them just in case I accidentally brought one in with me which I have done before.i don't really like the idea of using "chemicals" but where I'm going to be staying briefly til I get into my new place has a lot of fleas so wanting to do something else besides brushing to help keep her from having horrible issues.she was so bad that one time my mom suggested I put her to sleep but I didn't want to give up on her.o_O Manxcat does frontline work for your cats fleas??when I had my Siamese I used frontline about when the first started making it and it worked really good then it stopped working like the fleas developed an immunity to it.

I really can't say for sure unfortunately. Our housemate buys Frontline because he can get it at Costco so it's cheaper than the Advantage II we buy!! Because one of his cats spends time outside, she brings fleas in quite regularly so it's really difficult to tell if the Frontline really works for her - and with us using Advantage II on 3 of the 5, they tend not to have a problem anyway because that one does definitely work for them. I have heard that Frontline is losing effectiveness so it may be that it won't work as well as other options, but I can say that Advantage II definitely does work for us. :)
