Stubbie has been on Prozinc, formerly Lantus, and we are going back to Lantus. I just priced it at $288 per vial at Walmart. Yikes! A pen is $88.

Any ideas?

Also, I'm a heath journo: Thought a competitor to Lantus was coming around here soon, but can only find Sanofi's new once-daily product. (Sanofi makes Lantus.)

Stubbie's sugar is still too high on Prozinc, especially at pre-shot. Are any of you using anything else that provides better long-term control?

All the info on where most of us are buying is in the "Insulin from Canadian Pharmacies" thread

Marks is GREAT....It takes about a week from time you order to get it delivered to your home. It's packaged well and has always arrived in good shape. You can also get a tracking number to watch it move through the postal system

Also just found Mark's Marine Pharmacy on PharmacyChecker.com. Sells a vial for $114. That's very odd to me. You?

1) Check our Supply Closet
Or
2) Order from Mark's Marine pharmacy in Canada - about 1/3 the US cost. Requires Rx from vet - just have vet fax it in to 1-877-888-9805. Note: shipping during very cold or very hot periods may be tricky as Lantus cannot get too cold nor get too hot.
Or
3) Check your local Craigslist, and be careful about where you meet, how the insulin has been stored, and check the expiration date.

No, not odd. A lot of caretakers here get Lantus from Mark's. Insulin is just less expensive in Canada than the USA.
Unless you have a very high-dose cat, the pens are less expensive since you can use a whole pen (3 ml) before the Lantus loses effectiveness. That is not the case for using a 10 ml vial

@Steph - For info, Lantus is cheaper in the UK, too (much closer to Canadian prices). I paid forty-odd pounds sterling for a 10ml vial recently.

Just wondering why he's half of anyone else. As a health journo, I guess that makes me suspicious. But if you women are good with Mark, then so am I. Thank you! There is supposedly something new coming to compete against Lantus, so Sanofi is getting every penny now.

Thanks for the reminder that a vial gets old! I'll get a pen now at Walmart and then do Mark's. I have bought off of CL, and went to the strangest place ever. I was NOT convinced that the Lantus was ok; Had a lot of trouble regulating Stubbie there, too, and always thought, "Hmmmm. I wonder if...?"

There is someone on Supply Closet selling pens for very cheap. Again, I wonder...I mean, someone could theoretically inject water into that insulin...not saying anyone does/has, but I did wonder that about my Craig's List purchases...

There are probably hundreds of us buying Lantus from Marks since I found them a few years ago (if not more)....I spread the word as soon as I found them and they're treating a LOT of sugarcats now! The Facebook group members use them (not all of them are here) and there are other message boards that deal with diabetic cats that found out and I assure you....we LOVE Marks!!

They actually ran out of Lantus for a few months and had to stop taking new customers, but they're fully stocked now and are really great

How does he deal with keep the stuff cold?

How does he deal with keep the stuff cold?

It's put into a special type of envelope that helps hold the temp and a medical grade ice pack goes with it. The first time I ordered from them it was late June in Missouri (so 90+ degrees every day) and just my luck, there were 2 national holidays in the coming week (4th of July and Canada Day) when the post offices were closed....plus a Sunday....took about 10 days for my first package to arrive but I was able to use every last drop of all 5 pens.

They show how they ship on their video at www.canshipinsulin.com

I tried to answer pretty much any question I could think of in my original post when I first found them in that "Insulin from Canadian Pharmacies" thread

But seriously, since I posted that and the news has spread, literally hundreds of people have bought their insulin from Marks and I've not heard one bad comment about anything. Most people are thrilled with how nice they are and of course saving 2/3rds the cost is a big bonus!!

I hope everyone is right about Marks Marine. I ordered a vial of Lantus from them on March 17 and still have not received it. I live in Naples Florida where we have been having summer like temps for over a week now. I sure hope the Lantus is ok when it does arrive. Does anyone know what to look for if it has indeed gone bad from the heat?

I'm sure that if you contact them they will help you to find out what is happening with the shipping of your order. Everything I've read about them points to their being a reliable and conscientious business.

I was tracking my order on the post office website. It was supposed to arrive last Thursday March 24, but now the updated tracking says it will arrive today. I am just nervous that the insulin wont be good anymore if it isnt kept cold...

If I were in your position I'd give Marks Marine a call and ask for advice from the pharmacist as to the viability of the insulin.

If it's clear without any "floaties", it's fine

The worst that could happen is that it might not last a full 5-6 months, but if you're at all concerned, please do call them. They really are good at customer service and I'm sure they can ease your concerns.

Did the ship it on the 17th? Sometimes it takes a day or two to get all the details figured out so it's possible it wasn't shipped until the following Monday
