Nervous P. going backward with canned food

Okay, Nervous P. seems to have decided that he now doesn't like canned food, so tonight I've had to go backward and give him dry wetted(?) with some Weruva wet food, just so he'd eat more than a miniscule amount of food. I've also been switching the canned food up because he was turns his nose up at all of it even after I started using the FortiFlora. I have two other cats, one who is part PIG, who will eat all of Nervous P's food when he walks away. I've tried FF pates, Wellness GF, Friskies, Merrick, Nature's Balance and several others that I can't recall off the top of my head, and he doesn't like any of them. I have been feeding small meals 3-5 times a day. I don't have a scale to weigh him, he doesn't seem to be losing any weight, but he's a larger cat, so the amount of food he's eating doesn't seem to be enough. Am I doing right by giving him mostly dry (Precise Holistic Complete Grain Free) and wetting it with the canned so he'll at least get enough to eat and then increasing the wet a bit at a time?

Nervous P. is officially in remission as of yesterday (2 weeks without insulin) and, of course, I want to keep him there.

I personally think feeding Mr. Nervous Pervis dry food is a bad idea and one that make send him back to insulin, maybe it's just spring but all 4 of mine have been acting like they are tired of their food, I have been trying to make sure Scotty eats enough since he is diabetic but I can just take him and set him in front of the plate and say Eat Scotty and he will - as for the rest I have just been hanging tough on them too. They all eat Fancy Feast and Friskies Pates.

Hoping NP will eat the wet food but if he absolutely refuses the young again 0 carb is fed by some on the forum and my non diabetic eats it as well. My FD cat is on tight regulation so we feed wet and some freeze dried raw. There is also a "moist dry" food from Waggles that is 12% carbs they have 3 flavors.
We have to rotate wet food constantly... you are not alone. Luckily there are many to choose from.

There is a strong likelihood you'll knock Nervous P. out of remission if you reinstate the dry food: once diabetic, always diabetic.

My Saoirse has chronic pancreatitis so I feel for you over the finnicky eating. Have a look at the first link below; it has great tips for encouraging a cat to eat in general but the tips can also work to encourage a cat to stick with the wet diet. I've also included a link to a nausea symptom checker so that you'll be able to check whether the food might be upsetting Nervous P's tum.

Nausea symptoms and treatments

FWIW, next time you get blood work done ask your vet to run a Spec fPL. Some cats have subclinical pancreatitis. I've often seen cats here (my own included) who develop nausea issues very shortly after insulin treatment is withdrawn. For info, sometimes post-insulin-therapy nausea wobbles can be a transient problem.

Have you tried the FF Chunky, Flaked, Tender and Kitten varities? They are all under 10% carbs. My sugarboy eats them regularly and they do not affect his BG.

Good to know, Nancy and Scotty. I certainly don't want to risk doing that. He at the FF in the beginning, but he won't eat it any longer.

Jayla-n-Drevon,
I have tried frozen, raw rabbit morsels and some a sample of freeze-dried, raw that I got yesterday. He eats it at first, but them nothing. It's so frustrating. I haven't seen Waggles around. I'll see if I can find a retailer around the city somewhere. Thanks for weighing in.

Mogs, I need to find a new vet since his hypo debacle. NP always gobbled up the dry food. I haven't looked or called around yet. Neither one of the links are working. I even went to the homepage and tried to get to those pages and they are not working. :arghh:

Have you tried Tiki Cat? It's a little pricey, but all my cats love it, especially the chicken with egg in consomme. I have to say, it looks and smells delicious, lol!

Just FYI--Natures Variety make several kinds of the freeze dried raw--we rotate as mine snub it after a day as well:banghead:

I should have a big black bruise on my head by now from the frustration of NP not liking anything. Oh boy. I've not seen Natures Variety anywhere, though there are so many cat foods, I may have walked right past it before.

Just double-checked the links and they're OK. Sometimes Tanya's Site goes offline so keep trying them till you can access the pages, then print out the info for future reference. I bought Helen's book so I'd always have access to the info - worth every penny and good to give a little back for all her generous work.

Wishing you success with your vet hunting.

amazon has most all of the varieties--can probably search freeze dried raw or just freeze dried--some are hard (pure bites) I out those in a blender and make fairy dust so mo pukis:bighug:
Thanks for that tidbit about Amazon, I shop there often. I usually try and buy it locally so I can do returns easily if he doesn't like it. He didn't like the freeze-dried treats . :(either.

I had to snoop around and find my way to the links by starting at the homepage. I might try blending the tuna and water up now that I've opened it and tuna salad isn't sounding that appealing today. ;)

Well, I wish I'd liked what my dog's vet said about FD because I like him. Looking at all my responses and boy, I need an attitude adjustment.

Have you tried heating the wet food up a bit in the microwave? Squeak turns her nose up at her food sometimes and I find that, if I mix it with a little bit of water and zap it for 8-10 seconds, that'll usually do the trick. I don't particularly care for the smell, but she really seems to enjoy it!

Well, I haven't heated it in the microwave, but I warm it up by pouring hot water into it and mixing.

NP just ate a tiny bit of food and got sick shortly thereafter. He didn't throw up food, just liquid. Grr..., I feel bad for him. I also noticed that I haven't seen/smelled any poo in the cat box lately. I'm just afraid he's not getting any fuel.

Try raising his food and water dishes. If he's not eating much he might have a bit of a problem with stomach acid. And keep an eye out for the nausea symptoms from Tanya's Site. If nausea is the issue, then there are effective treatments available. BTW, sometimes cats vomit when they're constipated but to the best of my knowledge it tends to be when they're trying to pass a bowel motion that the vomiting reflex is triggered.

Boy, thank goodness for all of you or else I'd be at wit's end. To higher dishes!

It's actually called Waggers - my Murphy is the worst when it comes to eating - I've been happy with Waggers when he eats it (which he goes in spurts) Info is at http://www.waggers.com but the website has been down for at least several days - I found some at a speciality store but it's hard to find -you can it on Amazon and some on-line natural pet food sites. Another option for sporadic feeding is Wysong Epigen 90. - but this is strictly a dry food, whereas Waggers is semi moist. Good luck - I understand your exasperation

Actually, I think maybe the clerk showed me Waggers yesterday where I saw Tiki Cat and bought the Weruva. I hadn't heard of it, so I didn't look closely at it. I've seen Wysong Epigen 90 there too. Maybe. It all kind of blurs together after a while. My dog has suddenly become picky too, so I might have to make a trip back down to that store soon. Thanks for the tips.

Grain Free does not equal low carb and diabetic cats really need a low carb high protein diet. Often the "grain free" products just replace the grain with another starch for a filler and binder like potato or tapioca.

My OTJ guy does want to eat hard food too. I sprinkle the EVO on his wet food so that the carb content of the whole meal is lower and the moisture content is higher than if he ate the dry by itself.

I have always had good luck with sprinkling some of the Stella & Chewy's Tum Ticklin' Turkey over the wet foods to get a fussy cat to eat. It is a dehydrated complete food so it can be fed by itself too, just a little spendy.

ave you tried Tiki Cat? It's a little pricey, but all my cats love it, especially the chicken with egg in consomme. I have to say, it looks and smells delicious, lol!
This is funny. I brought some Tiki home from the shelter to try with Ani when he wasn't eating and my husband refused to feed it because he said he couldn't stomach opening the cans. Most of them were fish flavors, but Tiki is a little too *natural* for him.

@Merlin told me about Waggers - its' actually grain and (it says) starch free -it's worth checking out - I've had great results with it (when he will eat it) -- Evo raises the blood sugar in my cat - I also avoid food with potatoes and definitely tapioca is a no-no

Wow - what pet store is that - these foods are hard to find at local stores?

Carol, which Evo have you tried? I just bought a couple of "test cans" of the Evo 95% chicken and turkey, I will be so annoyed with myself if it raises Squallie's BG! :banghead:
