My cat is diabetic so I feed him fancy feast classic chicken. Is this good for him? How much should I feed him a day? He is 12 lbs. I just switched from DM dry but in order to avoid huge BG point drops I mix it in with the wet meals. I give 1/3 cup of the dry, a reduction from 1/2 a cup

Yes, FF Classic is one of the low-carb FF varieties.
How much each cats needs depends upon specific cat and how well BG is controlled. Best is to periodically weight the cat and then increase/decrease about based on what is happening to weight.
I would say 2-3 cans daily.

Is your kitty currently receiving insulin? If yes, then you need to be careful about changing from a higher to a lower carb food because blood glucose levels can drop a great deal both during and a little while after the transtion. Therefore the current insulin dose is very likely to need to be reduced. You really need to be home testing blood glucose to manage the food transition safely. If you're already testing that's great. If not we can help you to learn how. Just holler if you need help with this.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE begin home testing immediately, if you have not already!!! Your kitty's BG can drop dangerously low, even if you are doing a slow transition! He will likely need a dose reduction. He is currently on 5U Lantus 2x daily, if I remember correctly? That is a lot of insulin; it could become way too much for your kitty, with potentially deadly results, and you would have no way of knowing to decrease his dose without home testing his BG!

Hi William. I'm a fairly new member here too but just wanted to reiterate what the others have posted about home testing. We were also on 5 units of Lantus twice daily and feeding DM dry. When we stopped feeding dry food, that amount really ended up being too much and we have had a couple of moments where our boy dropped to very low numbers. We were lucky to have been testing and caught it. Please be careful! There are so many people here that can help you get all set up if you have questions.
