Doodles & Karen

Doodles 3/17 Doodles is hanging doing ok. He's eating but I don't think enough and still sleeping a ton. There was a short chase of the Moo last night (poor girl). Drinking a ton of water but accepting his meds very well and even eating the enalapril chicken flavored treat. I did make sure it was compounded sugar free. Still waiting for BW results and need to make the follow-up BW appointment for next week. They need to check his kidney values within 7-10 days of starting these meds.

Hopefully the depot will catch up soon and he comes down a bit today. Vines and prayers for all especially Elise & Max, Paula & Smokey and Elizabeth & Gus. :bighug:

ok Doodles you're out of excuses....work that juice little guy! Boomer misses his surfing buddy! Let's see some blue today!
Hugs to you Karen :bighug::bighug::bighug: I know how hard it is waiting but he'll get there!

Prayers and vines that the enalapril is well received and doesn't effect the kidney numbers. Max was sleeping more when he first started amlodipine. I think it takes getting used to when some of these meds are first started. Chasing is good. Max used to chase Tiffany. It was almost the only exercise he ever got!:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Moo seems to be his favorite toy these days. She's quick and a counter jumper  which he could never get that high. They did say it could take a little bit to see him out and about more.

So glad that Doodles is taking his meds well. Fingers and Paws crossed for the BW results and for the depot to fill. Karen, you are amazing with the way you have handling all this. Though it all, you have still been everyone's cheerleader and every time I read one of you positive post for someone else, it reinforces to me what a great person you are. :bighug: Sending lots and lot for hugs :bighug::bighug::bighug:

DH would tend to disagree slightly. I cry a lot but so what in my opinion. I really love all the kitties here and helps to see them doing well. Very sad to see those who are not. I've never lost a pet before. Was always forced to give them up growing up for unusual circumstances. Doodles has been my rock for 9 years and best friend. Can't thank you all enough for being here with us.

I cry a lot too and think that this FD dance and lack of sleep would do that to the most stoic of beans. Besides, crying is good for the sinuses. ;)

Yeah, I cry a lot, too...and have massive anxiety attacks. Trix barfed the other day and it threw me into a 2-day tailspin. But, I think that's what makes us L&LL beans special...we care THAT much, and even though it's hard on us, these kitties - all kitties - deserve it. It makes me sad that there are lots of kitties out there who don't get this kind of love.

As for the appy stimulant....I have very, very minimal experience myself, but I know may folks here have good luck with cypro. Most will tell you that only a teeny bit is needed, even though the vetty may prescribe quite a bit. Mirtazapine is the other popular one, but I do think it tends to make kitties a bit more agitated than cypro.

I'm sure others with more experience than me will weigh in.

While that 510 is not a pretty number, as long as he seems to be fine it's most likely not any sort of emergency. I wonder if that's a reaction the new meds or if it's the S&C??? I would mention it to the vet when they call you back - but I'm sure you already knew that!

Please come down, Doodles...and eat more, too, OK?

I'd also call Dr. Church's office and see if the enalapril could be doing this. It does have side effects like lethargy and because it can cause vomiting, I'm assuming it can cause nausea or inappetance until he gets used to it but I'd call.

I know that number is completely stressing you....it also did me when Gracie started doing that and she had never ever ever been even close to that high. I'm sure it can also make him feel bad but I'm concerned about what might be causing it.

More hugs Karen :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
I had a cat with kidney disease and had to give her an appetite stimulant a few times. I do believe it was Mirtazapine. It used to make her very hyper but then she was only about 5 lbs when she was at her healthiest/heaviest so I think it was just too much for her little body.

I've used mirtazipine several times, in fact I'm using it now for my civvie Gemini who's getting chemo. It does tend to make them agitated and vocal, at least for the first several hours. (Hence the nickname meowzipine.) I'd recommend starting with 1/8 tablet instead of the usual 1/4 since some cats can get disoriented and unsteady for a while on the full dose.

My Trinity was on enalapril and it made her sluggish -- mirt made her eat ravenously ....
I agree with Marje....I would call...:bighug:

I called the office and going to pick up metoclopramide. He is eating just not enough. He'll eat a little and then he walks away.

Anti-nausea and gut motility stimulator
It can treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It can also treat gastroparesis in patients with diabetes.

Looks like I need to get use to crazy, wacky numbers for a little bit. It wasn't the S&C since I gave him that after the 510 bg reading. As much as I want to increase him I'm waiting for the 6 cycles after that reduced dose :(:(:banghead:

I think ondansetron is a better drug for nausea and you can even give it with cerenia to address the nausea from different modalities.

My vet is not a fan of metaclopramide (Reglan) in cats. It doesn't work as well for many cats as it does in dogs. Have you tried slippery elm?

If he stays high and flat like this, I'd increase after four cycles as long as he's not eating dry food. Please don't shoot the messenger. And I was incorrect about raising after six cycles if you are feeding dry. My very bad bad. It's just my suggestion....

He's eating what ever he'll eat so I'm kind of in the middle somewhere. I'm holding the dose for at least 6 and will go from there. Thanks for reminding me the count started over after the reduced shot.
