3/16 Doodles PM +2 381 ... Diagnosis is HCM

The good news is they got it early. Frankie was diagnosed with HCM when he was two and is now 9 and doing very well. All signs of HCM have gone on the echo's which he has every two years now. My normal vet has to be reminded he has a heart problem as his heart sounds healthy and the murmur has gone. Funny though, I've never been told it causes insulin resistance, but that could explain why he is nowhere near regulated two years after diagnosis.

I just saw your post. I'm sorry Doodles was diagnosed with HCM but at least you have a direction now. Tarragon was diagnosed 4 years ago with it. It seems it is more common in Maine Coon's, at least according to our vet. He takes Diltiazim 5 mg twice a day and we have never had any issues since he has started his meds. He has an echo every two years and it has never gotten any worse. I haven't heard of insulin resistance being an issue with HCM but Tarragon has a lot of other issues (asthma, IBD) so I never know what is causing what. Let me know if I can do anything for you!

Just catching up with your post and want to say I will keep the very best thought for you and Doodles. Melissa's post above is so hopeful and we will all be praying that you and Doodles have the same result with meds. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks Melissa! Doodles has IBD too but we don't think it's progressed. Still have more bloodwork results waiting to come back. I'll have to ask about the Diltiazim. It is common in Maincoon's :(

Thanks for sharing and sorry about Frankie. We think it's Doodle's reason for losing his regulation but more bloodwork results coming. Glad to hear the HCM is stable for Frankie and again makes me feel that much more hopeful.

Just saw your dx. So sorry but...to repeat the others...now you know what you are fighting. You said that one dr said that he doesn't have heart disease. Drs think differently and HCM isn't typically disease. Disease is more coronary artery disease. HCM is more like a step in heart failure. It sounds scary but you can control it. I hope the labs come back good and he can start the medications. You are a good mama cat.
Just keep swimmin' just keep swimmin'

Sorry Karen - I read about Doodles because Murphy also has IBD issues - I know you must be relieved to have a good diagnosis and to have gone to a specialist. Fingers and paws crossed for great results from the new meds
