I am wondering what dose most people start with regarding pepcid--I got the original today.

I have read for a 10 pound cat from 1/4 to 1/2 of a 10 mg pill.

Also does anyone give in conjunction with ordanestrom?

Or 1 or the other?

My CRF (Rico) cat who is 17 I think has nausea at times.... not severe but if he doesn't eat frequently it is worse and early mornings he may puke a little ...

He gets SQ fluids regularly and his BW has remained very good for years now.

Thank you for any and all input :cat:

Hi Jayla,

You'll find comprehensive information about pepcid, ondansetron, etc., on this page at Tanya's Site.

Saoirse's mainstay med is ondansetron (she has chronic pancreatitis as well as early stage renal insufficiency). There have been times when she needed additional support and I've given her famotidine in addition to the ondansetron. If gut motility is an issue for Rico ranitidine may be a better med than famotidine. (I'm considering switching Saoirse to ranitidine but I want to run it past our vets first.)

Helen (author of Tanya's Site) recommends giving famotidine in the late evening so that might be a good idea to help Rico not to vomit in the early mornings.

Thank you Mogs :bighug:

When giving the pill form of famotidine, I have only ever heard 1/4 tab. Never heard it adjusted for weight. Our big guys got the same as the little girls.

We game Chris both when he was sick. It helped. I did not give them at the same time, staggered them so that he'd get more time nausea free.

After reading Melanie's post, I thought I'd better clarify the dosing schedule I use with Saoirse. I give ondansetron every 12 hours and if she needs famotidine I give it to her about 8 hours after the morning dose of ondansetron. BTW our vet advised me not to give other meds at the same time as famotidine in case it might interfere with absorption of the other meds.

I wouldn't give more than 2.5 mg. I take regular pepcid sometimes when my acid reflux gets painfully flared up and the full recommended 10mg pill works wonderfully and seems to even last into the next day or two. I'm 115 pounds and wouldn't give a cat more than 2.5 mg even if he was 10 pounds or over.
