Good afternoon! So today I will be taking Hugo to see the new vet, for his follow-up visit. His BG has been quite high these past few days, mostly in the yellows. Hopefully I would soon see some lower numbers too. We'll see what the vet has to say about his dose and his numbers. Wish us luck!

Thanks everyone! We're back now. The vet was running late, so we had to wait and wait...They took a fructosamine test (the vet insisted) and a pancreas test to see if pancreatis is present (or so I understood). The vet wasn't a diabetes specialist, just said that she had been to diabetes lectures. Hugo's BP was normal, but when she listened to his heart she said it sounded a bit abnormal, so they also took ProBNB blood test. I will hear about the results tomorrow or Wednesday. Suspecting HCM then, maybe? I don't know. She thought Hugo resting on the floor could be a symptom of a heart illness. :( I hope not.

I handed her the sticky about the TR and she read it and finally said it sounds sensible, but she thinks changing the dose after three days is too fast. And also that she thinks Hugo should be in the blue range and that is what we should be aiming for. The dose will remain as the 1.50 U for now, but she thinks it is okay to change if needed by 0.25 units at a time. And she applauded me about taking such an interest in Hugo's treatment and wanting to learn so much :) I asked so many questions so I think she was relieved to see me go...And finally she suggested to try starting Hugo with the Hill's m/d wet and dry food. I took the leaflet and said thank you :woot: Obviously won't be giving any dry to him.

When we got home, Hugo's BG was at 135 and I am shooting in an hour.

It sounds like the vet visit went pretty well overall. I hope Hugo gets good results back and there is nothing wrong with his heart. People have found out those prescription diets don't work as well as just feeding wet low carb food. Did you discuss the dental with the vet?

I got pretty scared about the heart thing. Maybe this could be a heart problem with him resting on the floor all the time...If I need to take him for a heart ultrasound, I can't afford right now.

Hi Tiina

Sounds like the vet visit went very well overall. (other than the suggestion of prescription dry food  )

Keeping my fingers crossed that there are no heart issues. I was told my guy had a grade 3 heart murmur back in September. When I took him in a few days ago I wanted them to have a good listen before I would allow Sub Q fluids to be given and the vet listened twice and said she heard no murmur at all!! Hopefully it will be the same sort of thing with Hugo.

Since Hugo is being pretty consistent about hitting blue numbers you could probably give it some more time before you decide on doing any increasing. It is nice to see Hugo getting a blue number today later in the cycle. Tonight's cycle could be interesting! Your vet seems pretty open-minded to the protocol and if she is not comfortable with increases every 3 days that is still good. Some people following TR will hold longer than 3 days depending on how their kitty is responding.

PMPS 146, but I shot anyway. Hopefully it was the right decision? Do you think there is a chance it will take him too low?

I'm so happy to hear about your Tuxie's heart murmur @Tuxedo Mom , turning out to be something not to worry about. It was the same with my other cat, Elvis who had anemia last year and they heard a bad gallop in his heart. It was the anemia causing it and now his heart seems fine.

Nice pmps for Hugo, hope it's the start of a great cycle, I'm with Carla, +1 and +2 to see where he is going:cool:

BFG has a grade one heart murmur, he was diagnosed with it 10 years ago when we adopted him from the shelter, makes him particularly lazy, or so the vet at the shelter said it would, not sure if BFG just uses this for an excuse for extra cat naps. It's never given him any problems though.

Aww, bless him :bighug: I hope my Hugo will be fine too. Especially if we get his BG under control.

+1 193, so I think he was on his way up. Or maybe a tiny food spike, since I wanted to give him something to reward him from today and so he got some of his favorite Felix.

ok he got that friskies out of his system!
I would give him a little LC that is quite a fast drop from +1 (or pmps)
I gave some Applaws Chicken with Asparragus, I think it's reasonably LC but has rice, so will be interesting to see how much it raises his BG. Retest in one hour or 30min?

Good call on not doing the increase! :D If we are seeing green on a dose (which he did already a few nights ago), we typically hold the dose longer, at least 10 cycles.

My Neko has had a heart murmur for 3 years. She's had a couple of echocardiograms. She has a mild left ventrical concentric hypertrophy (due either to her acromegaly or her Maine Coon heritage) and a mild dynamic right ventricular outflow obstruction which is very common in older cats. The cardiologist said that lethargy was the main symptom to watch for, as well as wheezing. I lost a previous cat to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.:( Paws crossed for good blood work results for Hugo.:bighug:

Thank you! The vet suggested doing an ultrasound to see what's up with Hugo's heart, but these procedures are so so expensive here. I can always ask around if someone would do it with a little less of an expense. I'm sorry you lost your cat :( :bighug:Has your vet done this blood test to your Neko, the one they did to Hugo today, ProBNP? I think I misspelled it earlier.

I have heard of the ProBNP, but have not had it done. It came out after it was too late for my previous kitty. Because Neko has acromegaly, I wanted more details than the ProBNP provides, hence the echocardiogram. And it turns out the murmur is not due to the slight hypertrohpy but rather the ventricular outflow issue. And the cardio vet is only 15 minutes away from home. :)

he has dropped 20 points in 30 minutes, and still earlyish in cycle I would be inclined to go for something above 10 below 15% and test in 30 minutes. If you don't have that then try the 8% again and test in 30 and see what happens.

He sprinkled blood all over me, it's in my eye too o_O I gave some Sheba Fresh & Fine, but really only two teaspoons is enough? I'm scared he might too low :nailbiting: This is the new sugarkitty mom talking...bear with me

Will retest in 30min like you suggested.

What an exciting night! I just got home and caught up. You're doing great with him Tiina. I'm glad the vet is on board with everything and sending heart vines :)
Thank you so much! I've pretty much convinced myself of some serious heart issue by now. But will wait what the vet says tomorrow and go from there. I think both Hugo and me could use some sleep after this day...:)
