Well I hoped we were getting "somewhere" last night, but we're back in icky numbers again today.

The vet called with the lab results (well, one of the labs since we sent the SDMA off to IDEXX) and although she didn't read off ALL the values over the phone, the only ones that weren't normal were the BUN, creatinine, cholesterol and triglycerides

BUN was 41 (normal 14-36)
Creatinine was 2.4 (normal 0.6-2.4)
Glucose was 268 if I remember right (which I thought was pretty good considering the circumstances)

Don't remember what she said the cholesterol or triglycerides numbers were, but they were high.....she asked me what I fed China and I told her a mix of raw and Fancy Feast....so once again she suggested maybe I should feed Purina D/M or Hills W/D.....or maybe Royal Canin....flat out told her that that wasn't going to happen because not only are they too high in carbs but their ingredients aren't any better than most "over the counter" foods as well as being a lot more expensive.

So we're on for the dental next Tuesday if I can scrape together a few more bucks since I had to use some of the fundraising money for the bloodwork, but as far as I'm concerned, I'd sell a kidney if I could if it would get her numbers back down where they were in January

Still waiting for the SDMA....maybe later today

Vet just called...the SDMA was 10 but I'm having trouble finding what that means...I think the reference range is 0-14 but I don't know how to interpret it....as in, "is it better for the SDMA to be closer to zero?" Is it "worse" to be at 10 than it is to be at 5? or is any number within the reference range considered "normal"?

What is SDMA?

Sorry some of those reports are not so appealing. Doodles cholesterol is high too. Hopefully her dental will bring better numbers soon!

@Paula ...if your vet uses IDEXX labs for all their bloodwork, it's now included in their senior blood panels, but my vet doesn't have a contract with IDEXX so we had to send the sample out separately (for an extra charge of course)

Chris, so glad that you have the dental done soon and hopefully that will help her numbers. Would the higher Bun cause her numbers to be higher?

The BUN is another test that tells us how well her kidneys are doing. I don't remember the exact numbers we've gotten before, but she's run a little high for a couple of years now, so between the BUN, creatinine and the new SDMA, it's looking like her kidneys are pretty "stable"

I know the 41 isn't a lot higher than she ever has been since the reference range goes up to 36 and she's always been a little higher than "normal"

What I meant was would the elevated BUN cause her BG to creep up?

That's what I meant...I don't think so since she's always run a little higher than "normal"....it's not something that has "changed" lately that I could say would cause a change in her regulation

Hi. The BUN is food influenced. The important one is the creatinine. The SDMA of 10 is great! Normal. I'm envious. My vet uses Antech so I never got one. It's good you are doing the dental now while all is normal. Congrats.

Glad that you got the bloodwork results! Sorry that they were not what you had hoped for. Hoping that the dental gets China back in the lagoon for you!

We hope all will go well with the dental. Very glad that China's test scores are in the ballpark.

Yo Deputy China, Come one back to the lagoon! There's work to do here!

The two are not related at all. Muscular cats can have a higher BUN. Eating a high protein diet can raise it. A fasting test would lower the BUN. The important number for kidneys is creatinine. What was it last time Chris? You might want to consider feeding a little lower phosphorus food, one without bone if there is such a raw food. There is no reason to be worried with these numbers though. CELEBRATE'n

I'd also be interested in her historic creatinine. Normally, that level would get my attention unless she's always been around there but the SDMA is normal....that's great!!! Good luck with the dental.

I gotz an extra pair of water wingz for da lagoon when you want to stop being so drumatic China!

Sending you some Sherlock Holmes-style vines to resolve the mystery of what's bugging her. Hope that she gets back on track soon!

Exercise.....blah. The vet said I needed to increase Jenks' activity level too and I just laughed. I'm sure he'd just look at the bird and then roll over and go to sleep. But boy, when he hears that it's food time, he's like an olympic sprinter.

My vet uses Antech too..that's why I had to pay extra to get them to send a separate sample to IDEXX for the SDMA

I really wanted the SDMA done since the BUN and creatinine have been a little elevated the last couple years (if I remember right) and I wanted a more definitive test done

I'll get the labs up on her spreadsheet when I get them but have to wait for snail mail
