Tiki Cat Gourmet Carnivore food

I just bought some tiki cat gourmet carnivore wet food - I gave some to Murphy last night and his blood sugar this morning was 527 the food is listed as 0 carb and 0 glycemic index. I re-looked at the ingredients today and dextrose anhydrous is listed as the 6th ingredients- if I am correct, this is sugar! There's other reasons for the black reading today, but I'm just wondering about why tiki cat would add dextrose to their cat food.

Yes dextrose is a sugar. Dextrose anhydrous means it has no water molecules.
One thing to remember is that manufacturers can say zeros for something if it is less a a certain % like maybe 5%. Since it is the sixth ingredient few calories are are due to the dextrose.

Thanks Larry I've got an email into tiki cat - I don't think I have ever seen dextrose as an ingredient in cat food too bad, because tiki cat doesn't have the guar gum or carrageenan

Hi @Carol & Murphy, I did a search about this online and came across a Google review that you may be interested to read (the reviewer also contacted the manufacturer, and it would seem that the recipe changed (to remove sugar) but that there is still some 'old' stock out there). Elizabeth thank you so much for finding this - from the thread you sent, the sugar was taken out in 2014, I just checked out the cans I got from Chewy's yesterday, and they were manufactured in February 2014. They expire March 2017. I don't know how to proceed from here - I guess I will contact Chewy's to get a refund or to exchange them for a newer batch that doesn't have the dextrose in it. Why would they put sugar into cat food in the first place? Again, thank you so much for finding this - I really appreciate it

Isn't that disgusting - why on earth does a cat need sugar put into their food - I'm surprised it wasn't high fructose corn syrup -I believe that is cheaper than sugar. I'm still waiting to hear from the company How are you doing, Mogs? glad to see that everything has stabilized with Saoirse.

That is a little disturbing that stock from prior to Aug 2014 is still being sold. When its something we want that went out of production it is all gone in a day.

Sugar is used when compounding meds too. It can take bitterness out of stuff. I suspect they also used it to make gravy a little thicker.

The tiki cat doesn't have any gravy - just shredded meat and clear broth - it's really a mystery

Yeah, I was calling the clear broth a "gravy". Some of them are really runny like water, some of them are a little thicker than that.

Thanks for asking after us, Carol. Saoirse's not out of the woods yet. I've not posted an update lately because I'm intensely superstitious with the PTSD. She has ups and downs. Bit worried about her tonight. She just had a meal and seems uncomfortable but I don't know why.

I'm sorry that Murphy's having a hard time with eating. I know how worrying that is. Saying a little prayer for you both.
