IS IT TIME TO CHANGE FROM PROZINC TO LANTUS?

When Lily was first diagnosed in November my vet had her on 4 units in the am and 3 units in the pm of Prozinc. It was suggested to me to lower her dose to 2 units-basically start over. She is now taking 3.25 units and it doesnt seem to matter whether she is on 4 units, 3 units, or 2 units, her glucose numbers have been running basically the same. I am so worried about her kidneys being affected with her high glucose for several months now. She still has no interest in playing at all, only sleeping and eating. Not much of a life for my little girl. My vet already knows I am interested in switching insulins....

At her next appointment I would mention the fact that your cat exclusively alternates between eating and sleeping, and that you are finding it very hard, ethically, to continue giving her an insulin that you know makes her act like this. Tell your vet that you want your cat back. Diego is still alert and involved with me during the day. He's on Novolin and I hate that he can't last longer than 8 hours on it and I do plan to discuss with my vet my very strong desire to get him on Lantus at our next appointment but if he was acting like that, I would be switching the insulin as soon as I possibly could.

You could try a tip that another member on here gave me. I haven't used it yet, but I will. Tell her that you want to TRY Lily on Lantus just for a month. If Lantus cannot produce better results than what she is currently on, then she can switch back, but ask to "try" her on it.

My issue is that I'm 23 years old. My cat's doctor has been practicing, and teaching, veterinary medicine (with a concentration in endocrine health) longer than I've even been alive. I have been finding it difficult to put my foot down and say "No, I insist that we do this my way" because she's old enough to be my mother :D so I'm trying to find my voice in this so that I can be Diego's voice.
