I have lantus for my cat, starting first dose today, I was wondering how I store it. I know it is in the fridge once it is opened but is there certain way to store the vial?

When I was still using a vial, I kept it in the box, put the whole thing into a cup and stored it on a shelf inside the refrigerator (not in the door)

You might want to consider buying the pens next time....they don't break if you drop them (it's really heartbreaking when you drop that vial and watch that liquid gold spill all over the floor!)

They're also good until the expiration date on the box instead of when the insulin poops out on you, so they can last 2 years or more (depending on the dose your cat is on of course)

With the vials, you might get 6 months, but when the insulin starts to go bad, all you can do is throw it away

ok thanks for the information. I still have to convince my vet about the pens, she said no even when I tried to explain about how to use them with the syringes.
Gato is only getting 1 unit right now

When I used vials I kept it in an empty pill bottle. Wrap a paper towel or cotton around the vial so it fits snug in the bottle. You only need to take the top off to draw the insulin. This protects you vial in case it is accidentally dropped.

Yes, we just use the regular insulin syringes like you're using with the vial and pull it out of the pen....we don't use the special needles that humans use with the pens

Here's some pictures you can show your vet if it'll help

well I gave her first injection last night and tested her bg this morning it was 262, down from 330 last night. checked again tonight it was 288. is this normal for starting out on insulin?
I use the ReliOn

when you first start on Lantus, it takes 5-7 days to "fill the depot" ....the "depot" is kind of like a "timed release"...for those first several days, some of each shot "goes to work" during that cycle, and the rest goes into filling the depot.....the depot then "releases" some of the stored insulin back into the body

You don't usually see the full effects of the dose until the depot is full and is releasing the correct amount back into the body

There's lots of great info on Lantus in the "stickys" at the top of the Lantus Forum. I encourage you to read over them and start posting there..You'll get the benefit of lots of experience from others that also use Lantus!

Also, it'll help if you'll go ahead and add some information to your "signature"....If you look below our comments, there's information like our name/cats name, age, sex, date of diagnosis, type of insulin, type of meter, type of food, other health problems, etc....as well as the link to our spreadsheets. Having all that information there keeps everyone from having to ask you the same questions over and over again

What are you feeding Gato?

ok thank you I am feeding her fancy feast classic mostly, I do give her the DM because I still have some from the vet that I bought

Do you know you can take the DM back? It's guaranteed ...you can just say your cat stopped eating it and refuses to touch it anymore

I know it's expensive and there's a lot better things to spend your money on!
