Today Dasher is starting insulin for his second time, I will be doing the 10:00-10:00 schedule .
The vet wants me to start at 2u , I think it's a little to high , his weight is just over 18lbs.
I thought of starting at 1u ....thoughts?

I'm will get a SS up later today or tomorrow . I'm also using the Lantus SoloStar for the first time .
I will feel better once I get a day or two under my belt......breath.....

We generally think it is best to start with a lower dose (like your one unit) and see how it works using home testing. you can raise it over time, using the data from your tests, to safely change if needed. But you can't get the insulin out of the cat once it's shot! I would go with the lower dose and start working on getting home testing down. We'd be happy to help you with that.

I was looking at his old SS and he responded quick , I will go with the 1u . I will get a new SS up soon too.
With the SoloStar I don't inject air and if I draw too much I just shoot it into a paper towel or something not the the pen correct? Does it matter how I hold the pen to extract the Lantus?

I'm under the understanding you do not put the pen back into the refridgrator once opened. The link above speaks of the vial not the SoloStar

Refrigerating and unrefrigerating a pen that has been pierced can introduce air into the pen and that will result in inaccurate dosing using the pen's dosing mechanism. If you draw the insulin out of the pen using a syringe then you want to refrigerate except when you remove the pen to draw out the insulin. An unrefrigerated pen or vial is only good for somewhat over 28 days for Lantus.

Okay great, it's in the fridge.
First shot is done!

and it is pretty good :)
also just for reference --the vet I consulted with said 2 units 2x a day and I went with 1 unit 2x a day--in the 4th cycle he went down to 74 on alpha track.... very grateful I was testing I can only imagine what 2 units would have done. Glad you went with 1 :cat:
