So Diego has a passionate love of chicken liver. I have iron deficiency anemia and every couple of weeks it gets pretty bad and I have to load up on iron. I cooked three chicken livers in a pan with butter and salt. He had been napping for 2.5 hours and hadn't moved but the second he smelled them on my plate he rose from the dead and stole one. Loves it. I'm letting him eat as much as he wants. He's eaten so little over the past several days I'm not worried about it but my question is can he eat this as a treat in his every-day regular diabetic life? If nothing else, now I know his kryptonite when he wants to starve himself out (and me out, emotionally :D )

I think it is high in Phosphorus so it might not be good if Diego needs a diet low in that. I don't think it'll give him complete nutrition on it's own so I wouldn't recommend it being his main food by itself. But as a supplement or a treat I'd say have at it.

He just had a complete blood profile done on Tuesday and the only thing out of normal range was thankfully just his glucose, so P doesnt have to be restricted. I've been looking for treats that I could safely give him for a while but hated to buy stuff he wouldn't touch

Watch the salt, but if he likes them, they're fine for a treat now and then!

Have you ever tried him with raw? Gnawing on raw meat is natures way of keeping their teeth clean!

I haven't but i wonder how he would like it. What types of meats would I get?

His teeth are a concern for me now too with him officially being a diabetic. Want him to have all his teeth on board for as long as possible

pretty much all meats are good to rotate-- you do not want meats with vegetables-
Stella and Chewys is good-
steves real food
natures variety
there are may very good prepared balanced raw diets-
be sure to check for fruits and veg--some of them may add it which will add sugar/carbs...you should be able to call the companies to get the carb count.

Too much liver for a cat will give it vitamin A toxicity which is dangerous.
It is fine to give your cat some liver cooked or uncooked but only in small amounts.
I feed my cat up to 10 grams a day or less.....no more.
I buy a tray of liver and blanch it quickly in boiling water then cut it up in about 7 or 8 gram pieces then freeze it on a flat tray. When frozen I put it in a plastic zip bag and use daily.
I would not add any salt to the cooking.
It might be a good idea to look it up on Dr. Google.

ETA have you tried giving raw chicken hearts or giblets?. Most cats love them and they do not contain a lot of Vitamin A like liver does.

Raw gizzards and wings/necks are good for teeth because they mimic the natural way cats keep teeth clean in the wild by "scraping" the teeth to get the plaque and tarter off

Luckily they're also fairly cheap because not all cats will "like" them....teaching them to eat raw anything can take time and patience

You can also try "chunks" of just about any meat....it's the act of gnawing that keeps the teeth clean, not the type of meat

I haven't tried any other organs. This was a totally coincidental discovery. He just decided today that he liked liver. I can try the hearts and giblets. If he liked liver he'll probably like that too

At least down South the two words are used interchangeable. I don't know if the rest of the US just calls them gizzards. I knew what you meant though :)

I know we always called all the "innards" like the heart, kidneys, gizzard, liver and usually the neck "giblets" when we were making stuffing and gravy on Thanksgiving (that's what came in the bag stuffed inside the frozen turkey)

I think "gizzards" are more specific than "giblets"....the gizzard being a specific organ like the liver, kidneys, heart, etc.
