Continuation from "911 Not eating"
Just got off the phone with the vet. He got Sonnys bloodwork back and said he is in the "VERY BEGINNING STAGES" of kidney disease. I asked him what we do. He said...he wants to get his sugar back under control first and see if that works. Then he also said that he would need a "perscription food" and thats what they do for CKD. I just dont feel that right...considering that i do not give Sonny perscription food for diabetes...Can i get some info on how to treat diabetes and ckd together?? It never ends.....
 
Can you post a copy of the bloodwork results and urine analysis you you have them.
What you do depends upon the how bad.
The kidney diets really have low phosphorous.

I dont have them right now. I am bringing him back next wednesday for a checkup. I know cats with ckd need a low phosphorus diet. I feed Sonny friskies pates right now for the diabetes. Are they compatible with CKD?
 
Both conditions can be managed but the first step is to get the diabetes well regulated (hopefully to the point of being diet controlled).

While we like to keep the phosphorus intake as low as possible, many of us do not use the renal foods until the disease becomes advanced. This is for 2 reasons: First, renal foods are reduced protein and can lead to loss of muscle mass; 2. Many cats do not eat these any better than the Rx diabetic food. This food list will give you many options. Key is to feed a food on the list that is less than 0.90% phosphorus based on dry matter analysis. http://www.felinecrf.org/canned_food_usa.htm#canned_usa

I would also suggest making it a policy to get copies of all labs every time they are run from this point forward. I set up a spreadsheet to track the results for easy comparison across time.

Thank you for all this info...so now i am looking for a food that is under 10% carbs and less than 1% phosphorus. Good to see there are a few! My boy is a Friskies boy so i can already see that will need to be changed. Vet did say to get diabetes u der control again before focusing on the kidneys....thank you again for this info. I will also get the labs!
