Sumo is still iffy we are working on it but I did test the other cats and do not like what I see. Misty very very fat(Mother of sumo) first time testing it was 9 but I did not get much blood on the strip, tested again today....18.5!!! Crap. She is not showing any signs of being sick. If she looses weight and has better diet could she bounce back? I am so discouraged. Should I try the glyburide on her too? She is 16 ish with some pretty bad arthritis. She does not move much.
Muffin perfect weight 6 ish mmol tested twice(sister of sumo)I have another one to test again named Clive and he is not fat so I'm hoping he is ok like muffin. He was sqirmy the first time and I fudge up the strip. The reading was 5. Just want to confirm with two test.
I am so sad and mad at myself for not taking their health seriously for a long time. I fear I might be down two cats very soon.

I would take to your vet. Yes, 18.5 (USA 330) is diabetic when at hoe in normal environment.
I would rather use insulin than an oral med.

Hi Missy,
I see from your previous thread that you are going to transition Sumo from dry food to wet.
Would it be possible to do the same for all your kitties, (better for everyone) and gradually get rid of the dry completely.
@Larry and Kitties do you think a change in diet could bring Misty's number down into normal range?

Just want to give you some hope...I was sure I was about to lose China, and as you can see from this first picture, she was really bad, but the next picture is after about 4 months on insulin, so they can really come a long way back!

Hi!
If you can get adequan from your vet it is very helpful with arthritis--mine are almost 16 and 17 and they still jump on counters and play.... 1 is a chub he is about 19 pounds BUT he was over 20 before we got serious--2 pounds to go! Just switching to wet food he lost about 1/2 a pound.
Krill oil is also very helpful and he likes it-my other not as enthused about the krill but both on adequan (and fluids for CKD)
its never too late!!

Well little update. Managed to test Clive he is perfect at 3. Fat ones not ok but normal ones fine. Tip to self, do not let a cat get fat.

Thanks for the tip, will look into it. I sure hope it comes in a liquid because she is impossible to give pills to. She is going on a diet now! Not too fast but she is on soft food now and I can regulate how much she eats. Everyone is in shock at their new habits, I have never heard cats complain so much. The meowing is awful.

Yes wet food intake is way up, some are not happy. She is going to try to loose weight and we will look into pain relief for her stiffness. Her and sumo are going to be on wet food only from now on and the others one are getting GO fit and free by petcurean in limited amounts. We are getting this on monday as well as more canned varieties. Could only find one flavor of acceptable fancy in my small village. Nutrition will not be ignored in this house any longer.

LOL--yes they are demanding!!
adequan in a injection... loading dose is a shot every 4 days for 7 shots....then you can do 1x a week/or 1x every 2 weeks /or 1 time every 3 weeks/no more than every a shot every 4 weeks and you have to do the loading dose over again :( it is a sub Q injection.

I have a grooming salon and work with holistic vets--we carry the GO food--petcurean is a good food but you may want to look into the regular instead of the fit.... often times they up the carbs and lower the fat which is not in the best interest of your kitty-(especially the diabetic)

If you need to feed dry might want to look into young again 0 digestible carbs-many people with dry addicts use it-
it is very expensive and very high calorie so they wouldn't get much-good luck hun:)

Oh thank goodness! Shots are easy compared to pills, very happy to hear this.
On the subject of the kibble...I am perplexed now. I looked at all the nutrient profiles on their site( more food maker should but a detailed analysis like this) The fit and free is 15 percent carb and all the other formulas are 30 to 40 percent. Am I reading the values wrong? I have looked into the young again and it looks great but with the exchange rate buying stuff from the USA it is too expensive.

I am not as good as many others at figuring out the carb content "as fed"--might be good to post " ? food question...." I am sure some others will be able to give you more exact data. The companies make it very confusing. After hearing enough holistic vets lecture on "less active" type of foods I am always cautious. I think Evo has a fairly low carb dry. I am sure Petcurean is much better than most of the other brands out there.
I will take a closer look at the Petcurean info I have and reply back tomorrow-
I agree shots are the way to go!

@ Jayla we Canadians are really stuck for dry food here. I have a kibble addict so have had to do my homework trying to find the lowest carb brands. The EVO was available here at one time but they exited the Canadian market last year. I personally found switching my girl from 28% food to the EVO did absolutely nothing. Didn't lower or raise her BG and I've seen others say raised their cat's BG. I really think, like humans, sometimes there is an ingredient in any food that doesn't work for some cats so each of us has to just use trial and error within the best selections available to us. I have recently switched my girl to Nature Variety Ultimate Protein which I expected might raise her BG given the tapioca in it, high up on the ingredient list. I have a rare IAA cat so I am still increasing her insulin dose every week which makes it hard to know exactly whether food is having any positive effect, but the Ultimate Protein certainly has not caused any increase in her BG which surprises me.

I am so glad you wrote this because I have been wondering about some things that I thought might raise or lower BG and it is just hit or miss it seems.
Thank you for this:bighug:

I called many shops looking for Nature Variety Ultimate Protein but the ones that do receive it say the often run out and that shipments are not guaranteed. They have problems getting it. The go is always in stock and I do know it is good. My parents have two 8 year old bengals that have been eating this for as long as I can remember and they are doing great. Again this food would be for the two healthy one in theory.

I had to look around for the Ultimate Protein. My nearest PetSmart didn't have and I initially had to travel some distance to another PetSmart to find it. Thankfully a new Pet health food store just opened nearby and they carry it but I will make sure I don't let my supply get too low given what you were told. Thanks for the heads up! I tried the GO but none of my crew was interested and it ended up going to a colony of ferals my friends feed!:banghead:
