My fur baby has an eye infection

My fur baby, who is 13, came down with an eye infection yesterday. His blood sugar reading tonight is 256 an hour after giving him his injection. Will the infection interfere with his insulin?



2 units Novalin twice a day
 
Any discomfort or pain can cause the blood sugar to rise. If your kitty has an eye infection it is best to have a vet look at it. He may require special drops depending on what the problem is.
 
We did go see the vet and I'm putting antibiotic ointment in twice daily. I am just worried because he hasn't been that high since I started home testing! The highest he's been has been 144.

Some of the eye drops that are used have steroids in them. My kitty used Tobradex for an eye inflammation and it did raise his glucose levels because of the dex in it. But better to get rid of eye infection.
 
Ok, thanks! I was thinking that the infection would raise his glucose levels. He's been the healthy one! We found out he had diabetes in Aug, then our 18 year old dog passed away Dec 1, and a week later our 12 year old kitty had surgery for a cyst removal and we found out 4 days after surgery he was diabetic! We've been fighting UTI's, high glucose levels (185 to 287), and diarrhea, with him since Dec 12th. We almost didn't get him home before Christmas. We're going in tomorrow to check if the staples can be removed. I am ready for my kitties to be healthy again!

You have certainly had more than your share of tough times with your furkids. :bighug: Sending positive vibes that your furbaby will continue to improve. If you have questions about feline diabetes please ask. There are some really fantastic people on this site. Also setting up a spreadsheet is very helpful, even if you only use it for yourself. Plus hopefully you are doing home monitoring to see how your kitty's glucose levels are doing.
 
This site is what started me home testing!!! My vet's wife, which is his assistant, discouraged me from doing it because she said the levels fluctuate so much. But, after getting on here and reading all the info and I was tired of watching my Buzz go into low BG stupor I decided I needed to begin. His vet had him on 3 units every 12 hours but I've been able to reduce his units down to 1!!! My other one (the troubled one) was on 13 units and I've been able to
Owner his to 11 sometimes. It's wonderful to be able be in control instead of wondering what is happening and knowing those levels aren't accurate at the vets because of the stress they are under.

Good for you!!!! Most vets don't understand how dedicated petparents can be. And yes what a relief to feel that you are in control. :)
