Well this looks fun!

Lincoln was diagnosed at the shelter while ChrisFarley was sick. Someone else took him home and started him on a diet change. The diet change didn't seem to do anything so Lincoln was started on Lantus. We just didn't think our cats could deal with a new cat coming in so soon after Chris and that we could handle the sugar dance again after a two month cancer battle.
The foster has had a hard time getting blood out of him for tests. I decided it was time we took him in so we could monitor him a little closer. As I set up his spreadsheet from her notes today, I am glad we are going to be watching his BGs a little closer. Today he is doing what I suspect he may have been doing for a while - lows that create the preshot highs.
Not quite sure what to do with his dose tonight. I was going to adjust the 3.0U/2.0U 11/13 schedule to a proper 2.5U/2.5U 12/12 but now I don't know if I go down to the 2.5U or drop back to the 2.0U. I think he definitely has a messed depot.
The vet thinks Lincoln might have a small intestine malasorption disease. His tummy, inside of the back of his legs, and chin have no hair on them.
It looks like we are in for a fun dance this time around!
He is a handsome man. Painfully skinny, and will be even more glorious when he is the proper weight.

I think you may very well be right in thinking that he's dropping too low and then bouncing high by PS

If that 57 on 1/1 was correct, it looks like 2U may be too much for him too

I think I might drop him back to his weight based dose and start over since you have so little data on him concerning how low the doses have been taking him. I'm assuming you're going to do TR? Do you have a current weight on him?

He sure does look painfully thin, but we know how to help that, don't we? ....He'll be a beauty with a little more meat on his bones!!

I have to check to see if she has his weights in the chart, I asked her this morning but don't remember the exact # 6.7lbs I think, I will have to take a scale up and weigh him. I expected him to weigh more than that even as thin as he is. He is a tall, long boy. Way to big to weigh that little.

The other foster said he was getting 2.7oz 4X per day of the Wellness. That's 430 calories, yet he's only gained 5oz in the time she's had him. Deandra also weighed when I started with her and she was getting about the same cals, she gained 5oz every 3-4 days to start. She was only meant to be about 8-9 pounds. Lincoln should probably be more like 13-14 so we might need to step up his cals a little. He is crazy hungry. We are very good at fattening up fosters though

Lincoln is showing us something interesting with the AT. It has always read higher than our meter by about 5-7% when we've compared before. In these low numbers it has dropped down below our meter and it seems to be bouncing around. That LO is supposed to mean under 20 when the Aviva said 62 and then it gives a 48 when the Aviva said 57. I don't really believe in comparing (except when I have to deal with new vets and show them my meter works just fine), but gives some interesting data on low number readings.

Yeah at 6.7lbs, his starting dose on TR would only be .75

I think I'd plan on reducing him and starting over but others may have other opinions

I decided to go with 1.5U. I don't want to drop his dose too fast as that can mess them up too. Hopefully we can flatten him out.
I may have a little bit of issue from this new vet about changing things on my own, but when I just talked to the shelter director who wants me to foster all the diabetics and told her what it looked like was going on with his numbers, she was perfectly fine with me adjusting things to keep him safe.

He is such a sweet boy so cuddly. My boys have been camped outside his room quite a bit today. They just touch noses when I let them see him. I haven't seen two of my girls since I brought the carrier in. They must not know it was a boy in there. They LOVE boys. His last foster had some fighting with her cats at first, he doesn't seem to care about mine.

Lincoln looks like he'll be one handsome dude when he fills in. Looks like he hit the jackpot. :) Interesting that the shelter director wants you to foster all the diabetics. Well, you can't argue with success. But it sure seems like they get a few of them in.

Good luck with finding a good dose. He'll tell you sooner or later what it should be.

(((((Melanie)))) I couldn't believe who wrote this condo, you changed your avatar and I love it! You have the biggest heart of gold, yeah, Lincoln really hit the jackpot landing a spot in your home! :joyful::joyful::joyful: He is beautiful, love that tail and I can't wait to see you fatten him up a little!

Is he being treated for this supposed small intestinal malabsorption problem? Sending all kinds of vines for him and uber hugs for you and your DH! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Glad you dropped his dose - i definitely thing the 2u was too much. You'll soon figure out if the 1.5u is right or needs tweaking. He's lucky to get to come to your house, the home of the Queen of Diabetic Cats getting into Remissions! :D

I'd be suspicious of a food allergy with his hair patchy like that. I'd try a grain-free canned food first and see if that made a difference. Poor little guy - does it seem to itch?

and kudos to you for taking that sweet little Lincoln in.

We tried a supplement called Missing Link Ultimate Feline Formula for our civvie Nikolai GA who had malabsorption issues and it really helped him a lot. However, he wasn't diabetic. It messed too much with Miles' numbers, most likely because it has molasses in it, but I still thought it was a great product based on how much Niki's coat improved. Lincoln is such a little cutie. Better get some weight on him 'cos he's got way too much TAIL...adorbs! ;)

We actually foster them from both shelters I volunteer at. Cecil and Sly were from one, Chris, Deandra, and Lincoln from the other. There have been a handful more that have been either diet controlled right away and didn't go into foster, or I had another at the time. There really has been a lot for our size of shelters in the last couple of years.

Is he being treated for this supposed small intestinal malabsorption problem?

No. The test to confirm is $300. The shelter is waiting to see if the hair problem improves with regulation of the diabetes.

Thankfully it looks like he is going to turn early tonight. Hopefully he just turns sideways, not up, and surfs it now. I have been helping with trying to trap cat before we went into our -40 windchills this weekend, I haven't gotten a lot a sleep lately.
