Blood sugar fluctuations during the day

I came across this article which explains in very easy to understand terms how blood sugar fluctuates during the day. The body, glucose and insulin are not static and have many different ups and downs daily. This article was written about the human body but the same principles also apply to our sugar kitties. Hopefully if can help some people to understand the whole process.

@Tuxedo Mom - That's a very useful site indeed. I found the following article there last year. It really helped me to better understand how the pancreas actually works and what goes wrong when diabetes is present.

How Blood Sugar Control Works--And How It Stops Working

Thanks Mogs. This is another great article explained in easy to follow language. The more we know about how our kittie's (and our) bodies work the better we can understand how the whole treatment process works. A lot of people look at using insulin in the same way as taking an antibiotic and nothing could be further from fact.

So true, Mary Ann. For example, Saoirse had a major problem with high blood glucose levels if she went without food for more than about 3-4 hours. I didn't know whether the high numbers were coming from digestive discomfort (Saoirse has chronic pancreatitis), stress from being hungry for too long, or some other reason. The article I linked to helped me to understand how the mealtime pulses of insulin were helping to keep Saoirse well-regulated and that overall she continued to have a problem with basal insulin secretion despite having remission-quality BG numbers most of the time.

This site helped me to actually understand what was going on with Saoirse's blood sugar regulation system, and it helped me to be creative and proactive in terms of finding solutions to Saoirse's regulation issues. Needless to say, I was very grateful to the site's author: I had been looking for something or someone to explain to me exactly how a healthy pancreas should work for months! That's the trouble with the internet: most - if not all - of the info we want is there. The tricky part is getting to the stage where we finally work out how to ask the right questions that will find it. ;)
