Max, maybe need insulin change!

Please give me some input, I haven't updated his spreadsheet in over a week. His numbers now are all over, tonight he is 560 preshot. Going down very slowly, got a new vial of Vetsulin thinking maybe first bottle has gotten old, but still seems to stay high this week. What would be the next choice of insulin?? I'm thinking about calling the vet tomorrow and ask to try something different

Neko was started on Caninsulin/Vetsulin. But she didn't get good duration. It pooped out well before the next shot time and she was miserable the last couple of hours of the cycle. Some cats do OK on Vetsulin, but usually the longer acting insulins are better. I would choose one of Lantus, Levemir, or Prozinc/PZI as better options for cats. If you vet has familiarity with one of those, that might be your next choice.

Hello, yeah, it might be time to change the insulin. Also, when you have time, could you do an update in your signature? I see you've listed his age, Dx date and insulin, but it's also helpful for us to know where you are located, what type/brand of food.

If you decide to go with Lantus or Levemir, get an Rx for the pens (it is more cost effective/less wasteful) and for syringes if needed in your state. You'll use the syringe to withdraw the insulin, not the pen needles.
The least expensive place we've found it for US members is ordering from Canada at Mark's Marine. If it is too cold, they may not be able to ship. In that case, check our Supply Closet, your local pharmacies for willingness to sell individual pens, and check Craigs List (ask how it has been stored, and the expiration date, plus meet in a well lit public place).

Another resource you may want to look at, as far as saving money on the insulin is concerned, is an app called "GoodRx". Most all major US pharmacy chains use it as well as a few mail-order pharmacies. However, even if the pharmacy you use isn't listed you can still save money on the Rx! Practically every Rx has a "coupon" that can be used at ANY pharmacy! I saved over $100 on the last vial of Lantus i bought here in Charlotte, NC!

What you're probably hearing about is Lantus, but in the vast majority of cats, they're on such tiny doses that there is no "sting".....most of the cats that have trouble with it are on really high doses
