(Also posted in Prozinc forum) Hello there, this is my first post besides my intro. My name is Rhonda, my sugar cat is Frank. It's only been 3 months since diagnosis and he's gone from Lantus to Prozinc while very obviously deteriorating somewhat - he used to be a big, strong, muscular cat with beautiful fur who now looks a bit like a stray - he's lost weight, looks scrappy and can't jump like he used to. I love our vet but I feel that no-one will care about him like I do, and I fear that of course, she has other patients and therefore isn't that interested in pursuing this treatment with much zeal.

In early November we ceased all access to dry food. He hates it. He enjoyed canned food for breakfast previously but getting it all day every day leads to protests and hunger strikes. We stick to our guns but it's hard. (There are 6 other cats who get kibble so Frank wants it, too.) We have other special needs fur babies including 1 with no teeth, 1 with kidney disease, 1 with pemphigus (an auto-immune disorder), plus a kitten so this kibble battle is a big deal. It's like one of us has to be home and watching to see who's hungry all the time.

We finally got Frank down into a normal range a few times on Lantus but then I guess he was bouncing? His BG would skyrocket back into the 20s (mmol/L, we're in Canada). We had almost daily contact with the vet, trying to stabilize him but to no avail. He was switched to Prozinc 9 days ago. The vet sold me a bag of Purina ProPlan kibble, said it was <8% carbs so it would be ok for Frank to have. I am skeptical, and have read from others' responses to my intro that it's not possible for a kibble to be ok for sugar cats. I thought it was a godsend but if it's true, we'll have to take it away.

I guess this is the place for newbies to post so that's all I can think of at the moment. Frank's spreadsheet will be in my signature. Any advice anyone can give would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Rhonda, I think you'll get more ProZinc users attention if you post in the ProZinc/PZI forum. You can just edit your above post to say you've cross-posted to ProZinc so you're not bouncing back and forth looking for responses. Then just copy and paste this message to a new one in ProZinc but put prefix "?" on the title with something like "Guidance Needed" or whatever so they know you need some assistance. :)

Welcome Rhonda and Frank! It's really frustrating when our vet doesn't meet our needs. By the way, there are no dry low carb foods other than Young Again, Evo and Wysong. I'm betting that Pro Plan you have is at least 18%, which is WAY TO HIGH! :nailbiting:

Thanks, Linda - when I looked at the Prozinc forum it seemed to say that if you're new, don't come here yet, go to the main health forum for awhile until you get the hang of this... it's all kinda confusing but I'll figure it out thanks to nice people who point me in the right direction... :-) I appreciate it!

Never read that before not being a ProZinc user! I see what you mean and agree that it's a bit misleading. You've already sort of been through that Health Forum "stuff" in your intro message. Besides, you've been at this game for a bit and are not new to insulin but new to ProZinc. Believe me, no one in the ProZinc group is going to have any issue whatsoever. They are a wonderful group of very helpful folks and you don't need basic stuff like testing hints, how to give insulin, etc....you need assistance with how to best use the ProZinc to get Frankie regulated and that's where you'll get specific assistance! By all means if there is more general stuff you have questions about, then the Health Forum is always there but your need right now is best served by ProZinc users.

Hi Rhonda,

Hopefully the members with extensive experience of using Prozinc will be able to help you get Frankie's BG better regulated.

I note your comment about Frank not being able to jump as well as he used to. That might be down to losing muscle mass but also possibly because he might have a touch of neuropathy. When blood sugar is not regulated well it can affect the nervous system. Methylcobalamin B12 supplementation can help cats with neuropathy. Zobaline is one brand that is suitable for diabetic cats (no sugar in the tablets).
