Gum disease...eating less

Brandy has been doing so Well but the last week she's eating less and so I've only been giving one unit of prozinc. Had blood work done Friday (awaiting results)

. Doc says she has a bad gum infection (she has AWFUL breath) and that he can't really treat it because steroids affect diabetes too much don't know what to do then. Also she has a skin rash he gave her antibiotics for. Otherwise she seems happy. Don't know about the steroids though. What do others do?

A full dental cleaning with any needed extractions should help with the infection. Then its a matter of waiting for it to go away.

I agree. Also, once the infection is cleared her BG levels may also lower. Infections can increase BG levels.

Well the vet called tonight and her blood work was perfect. I asked about cleaning and he said it wouldn't help because her teeth are very good and the infection is on the gums. Said he COULD give her prednisone steroid but it would increase her glucose. I may not have a choice. She's doing Well With the glucose though. Hate to mess that up but Don't want her mouth to be sore.

Does anyone know about the effects of steroids for diabetics?

Steroids raised BG and an increase in insulin is required.
If not already diabetic, steroid can induce diabetes.

There is a feline stomatitis Yahoo group. One of the treatment options that has been helpful for some is the Dallas Syrup. Your vet would have to sign a nondisclosure agreement to be able to review the ingredients.
The traditional approach of steroids and antibiotics tends to have limited success in stomatitis, even with full mouth extraction of all teeth by a veterinary dental specialist. You must do x-rays to ensure no pieces of roots are left below the gums.

So, it doesn't seem like much can be done by the sounds of it. The vet said it was not a very treatable thing, especially for a diabetic.
