First I wanted to know if missing one shot a month will hurt my baby at all?does it use up her lantus depot and have to fill it up again?also what litter is the best?was wondering if scoopable litter lasted longer than regular litter?miss kitty is going thru so much litter still.

Yes, skipping a shot will drain the depot, at least somewhat.

I use PetCo's generic clumping litter; it seems less dusty than Pet Supplies Plus. It is unscentented (I find scented litter really obnoxious).

I use Dr Elsey's precious litter. I also use the brand Paws which I prefer but it means a special trip to store and they don't always have it on the self. I go through 2 20lb jugs a week. FD cats pee a lot and you will go through litter a lot.

Do their drinking peeing symptoms die down after being on insulin awhile?i started buying the 99% dust free kind.tidy cat.but it don't absorb very good at all.i have to change it every 2-3 days.in 2 weeks went thru 40 3/4Lbs of litter.so dr elseys is clumping?clumping sounds a litter better at lasting longer.

I've never found Tidy cats to work very well. Dr Elsey's is a clumping litter and clumps very well. With 6 cats, I only go thru 1 -40lb bag about every 2 weeks.

Yep. As a cat becomes well-regulated their drinking and peeing should go back to normal.

(Caveat: if the cat returns to well-regulated numbers but is still peeing for their country the treating vet should be advised of this, since polyuria can be a symptom of conditions other than diabetes.)

Tidy Cat comes in both a clumping version and a non-clumping version. Made the mistake of getting the non-clumping version once. Horrible!:(

Switched to Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat several months ago after being unable to take my own coughing every time I scooped the litter boxes ( 6-8 times a day). Much less dusty than the supposedly 99% dust free Tidy Cat. I order from Chewy at http://www.chewy.com/cat/dr-elseys-precious-cat-ultra/dp/32363 and love the delivery to my door. Price has gone up a bit since the last time I ordered, but since I don't cough from the litter dust, I'll stick with the Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat litter.

I am also a Dr Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra user. Went to it because I was looking for a lower dust. Clumps much better than others IMO, but you need to make sure you keep enough in the box 3-4 inches or it will be like concrete on the bottom of the box. We used Tidy Cat and Fresh Step prior and neither stood up to our busy household and the dust was horrendous. Dr Elsey's is showing some quality control issues these days. I get some really dusty bags and have heard others getting some not so great bags. Even the bad bags seem better than the other stuff though.

We almost never "change" our litter. We just scoop and add more as needed. It doesn't get stinky like the other stuff because it clumps quicker and better. Our litter usage went down considerably when we switched.

Most of my diabetics returned to normal peeing habits though some of them still had higher volume than the non-FDs.

As far as missing a shot - lantus likes consistency so you will likely see effects from a missed shot and avoiding it if possible is a good idea. But we have to take fur shots in stride and they don't usually derail us, so one missed shot shouldn't derail you either.

About about every 3 weeks or so, after scooping, I dump the remaining litter into a pail and thoroughly scrub and sanitize the sandbox. Then I use this stuff called Lucas Slick Mist on it. You can buy it at Walmart in the auto section, it's a detailing wax/ polish. It makes cleaning scooping so much easier as it doesn't stick to the sides or bottom then. It has a slight, but not offensive odor that disapates with in 15-20 minutes, the kitties don't mind it at all. I used to use paste wax, but found that the Lucas actually works better.

I also noticed the slight price increase, but it's not enough to make go back to that dang dusty stuff either. Besides, from chewy.com it gets delivered right to my garage where I store it anyway.

Never heard of that stuff.does it work on the scoops too?fresh step was soooo dusty everything had cat box dust on it awful.tidy cat 99.7% dust free was dust free I was surprised but won't last long against the pee at all.i bought some clumping litter for now and might order some of that dr elseys clumping litter.

I use Okokat litter, the natural wood one. It's pricey but with four cats, one of whom is a diabetic, I need a good litter. This stuff clumps like nobody's business and keeps odors down, too. They also don't track it all over the place, like they do with so many other litters.

I use vegetarian chicken layer crumbles - yep you read that right chicken food! It's also great on clumping, low on dust, good with smells and probably cheaper. You have to make sure to get the vegetarian type though or things could turn pretty rancid!

I ended up missing 2 shots with miss kitty cause her sugar was way too low when I left to give her shot.her symptoms flared up worse briefly but was thankful her sugar wasn't as high as last month after missing one shot and that her depot was still there somewhat.by 2nd shot her sugar dropped into 90s.glad about that.

Hmm, I never thought about using it on the scoop, but I'm gonna try it! :cat:

That's something to think about.....

I've never heard of that one, lord knows I do get tired of having litter tracked all over! But if it's pricey, having 6 cats might make out of reach for me as I'll be retiring this Thursday from hairdressing after 30 years, for health reasons.

Chewy.com has it for $16/18 lbs, they also have a 12 lb and a 7.5 lb box. It's also sold in some pet stores, and it might be in Walmart, not sure. It seems expensive but I think Okokat lasts longer. I have 4 cats and 5 litter boxes, and I go through an 18lb box maybe every 4-5 weeks.

Ouchie. I pay $16 for 40 lbs. for the Dr Elsey's, I'm happy with the clumping and the odor control so I guess I'll just have to keep sweeping......
