Cats and weighing

Lately, I have been weighing Bubba daily because of all his weight loss. Yesterday, he weighed in at 14.4 and I was elated because it appeared he had gain 2 oz. This afternoon, he weighs 13.4. Can cats vary as much as 1 lb from day to day?

I'm no expert, Bobbie, but I doubt that's a natural variation, over the course of one day, in a reasonably healthy kitty. I would suspect an incorrect measurement from the scale. I know, with mine, if I move it at all, it tends to give different weights. If he was at 14.2 two days ago and 14.4 yesterday, I would think that 13.4 is an error and re-weigh him.

No - one of those has to be a mistake. Maybe the scale didn't tare right. You'd see that much weight loss and they'd not be eating for at least 3-4 days.
I try to keep the scales in the same spot on the floor everyday. It is so weird. I even went out and bought new scales that did .2 weight. :banghead:

I'm loving the baby scale I have too....wish it did weights in "pounds and ounces" instead of just ounces or grams, but it's easy enough to convert

I have a bath mat that sits on it so China has something to "hang on to" and she stands like a little statue so I can weigh her (it's set to automatically tare to compensate for the weight of the mat)

Trying to weigh once a day will drive you crazy...weights really can fluctuate...I wouldn't try to do it more than twice a week

Are you using a "control" to validate the scale? I have one of those 3 lb hand weights that I weigh first, every time I turn it on. (Not to confuse the situation, but my 3 lb weight actually weighs 2 lbs. 12 oz.!)

So as long as it still weighs 2 lbs. 12 oz. every time, I feel better about how much it says that the kitty weighs.

Before I bought the hand weight, I was just using a large can of baked beans. It doesn't really matter what it is, as long as you use the same thing every time.

My scale bounces around and if I get on and off sometimes will read a little different too.so it might be a scale problem instead of kitty problem lol.

If you're weighing yourself with and without cat, check your math - that was usually my problem until I got a set of baby scales. I LOVE the baby scales - I set them up and have animals pushing each other out of the way to lay down in the basket on top. :)
Where do you get the baby scales at?do you just put cat on only?

My hubby seems to think it's my math also (I suck with math) but, I am plugging the number into a calculator. He thinks I am plugging in the wrong numbers. I am going to get the baby scales, cause this is driving me nuts.

That is a very good point! I have some hand weights and will check them. Thanks for that tip!

How big are Bubba's piddles and poops? Did you weigh at the same time of day?
His piddles vary, some days normal size, a little bigger than a tennis ball and other times the size of a brick. I don't weight at the exact time each day, but usually mid morning. I think I need to fine tune the timing.

Are you able to catch Bubba just after he has been to the loo? It might help reduce the influence of the extra ballast on the figures if you weigh him just after he has been for a winky-tinky. Perhaps keep a log with time of day as well as weight?

@Woodsywife -

I just checked my scales and there's no branding at all; it's a generic product made in Germany. (Sorry! :( )

I had a look at the link Chris & China posted. That looks pretty much like the same deal as Saoirse's scales. I think Chris' recommendation is a good one for you to look at (and it's about the same price point as the one Saoirse has). Lyresa's scales are much more sexy, though! ;)
