Hi all. As if I don't worry enough about this cat, with her proclivities for eating inedibles, mostly plastic, she has now stolen part of a sandwich with some fried onions on it. I have no way of knowing if or how much onion she may have consumed. What symptoms should I be on the look-out for? Thanks fort the help. I'm already concerned that she may have a blockage from plastic she ate earlier this week; she's going to be the death of me, if she doesn't kill herself, first!

Lucy, can you call an ER and ask them? Looks like weakness and anemia within 2 days would be signs but I don't know that what she ate was large enough to really hurt.
Lyresa, she didn't eat a whole lot, just a bite or two at most, I'm guessing. Is that enough to hurt her, do you think?

In my opinion, I don't think it will hurt her. Most of the toxins are in the skin of the onion and when onion is cooked, more of those toxins are removed. Were they regular onion rings or those canned fried onions?

No...I really think she'll be fine....cats have been eating stuff we drop on the floor for years....a tiny little snack off your cheesesteak probably won't hurt anything

Hey Candy!!! You're not supposed to eat the onions....you're supposed to eat the steak!!!
Lol, she eats ANYTHING! Especially the things she shouldn't!

Wow, I guess I'm just not having a good night tonight. :( I went to give Squallie his insulin, and I guess I didn't have a good grip on his skin; the needle didn't go in the crease like it was supposed to, he flinched like it hurt, the syringe bounced out of my hand and onto the sofa and when I went to throw it away it was empty. So I don't know if any of the insulin got into him at all and, if it did, where it went. I am also apparently coming down with a bad cold or flu cuz I feel like crap, on top of all my kitty concerns tonight. :arghh:

Sorry for the rant. :(

So sorry Lucy! Sounds like a crazy day. Sending hugs.

How's Candy today? What an armful she is! Hope you're feeling better. I had a sinus infection last week. It definitely is the sick season, seems everyone I know is sick right now. Tell your kitties to earn their keep and make you some chicken soup. :)

She finally pooped this morning, a "real" poop, so I'm hoping the last round of plastic she ate is not causing blockage. We did a little celebratory dance. :DNo seeming ill effects from the stolen sandwich with the onions, so hoping we're clear, there, too. With her, it's always something, lol! I feel a little better today, just really, really tired.

Oh Lucy, I am just tuning into this episode of "Candy Dandy Look Ma What I ate" She is like a little octopus, into something at any given time. Plastic! I remember when she ate some of that some time back, geez........

I hope you are feeling better too.

Just looked at Squallie's SS and if it were a fur shot, he recovered this evening.

Think Candy is just trying to help take some of the FD stress off of you. ;) Hang tight, my friend.

Thanks, Bobbie. Your description of Candy as a little octopus made me chuckle, that's her to a T, lol! Yes, plastic is her snack of preference, but she'll consume other inedibles, as well.

Squallie's doing pretty well, i'd like to get those AM highs down a bit.

How is Bubba doing since his surgery? Have he or Forrest caught you any more giant monster mousies, lol?

I'm hoping for some plastic-filled poop, myself!
I know, and I've got fingers and paws crossed for you. It's such a terrible worry! My sons think I'm crazy because I get so excited over seeing a normal poop from her but, oh, what a relief it is! Here's hoping Jojo presents you with some plastic-filled poop and can avoid the surgery!

Yup. And he's at the vet, hoping things will pass. (I should get so lucky!). I suspect he'll be having surgery today.

Not a peep.
The vet was out when I called earlier.
He didn't eat this morning and they did take another x-ray; I don't know the results though.

Not passing & not eating.Stomach still distended.
Surgery tomorrow, including an esophageal tube in case he continues not to eat.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that! My heart really goes out to you, BJ, I could so easily be in the same boat with my Candy. Please keep us updated on Jojo's progress.

Keeping Jojo and you in my prayers, and sending all healing vines and positive thoughts.

Dang, I just saw your onion post :( please, take your cat to the vet asap !!! Onions are highly toxic for cats! The toxins cause hemolysis and the first symptoms will appear after a 4-5 days. Any amount of onions can initiate the hemolysis ... it basically makes the red blood cells dissolve. Even if the amount of red blood cells lost is not enough for your cat to show signs of anemia, it can be enough to harm the liver and kidneys. As soon as the blood cells die, the body tries to flush them out which puts them in overdrive and can cause severe damage to the organs.
My Thabbo went through onion poisoning this summer and was for 10 days in ICU. He had at some point 100% of his red blood cells damaged and they had to fight hard to save his kidneys.

Wow, what a nightmare! Thank you for the heads-up! She has an appointment scheduled for Friday, I'll make sure to tell him about it!

please don't wait that long! if your cat has hemolysis because of the onions, you need to know now! You need to get blood work done, to see if there are damaged red blood cells and how many there are.
Thabbo ate more than your cat did, but when I called my vet and asked if onion was a problem, they only said: get him here RIGHT NOW. they started him on IV meds to protect his liver and kidneys, and phoned hospitals to find someone who could do blood a transfusion if need be. We had Thabbo in the ICU of the vet school 6h later (4h drive involved). They did blood work twice a day and at some point Thabbo had 100% damaged red blood cells ... and he was still jumping up and down their office tables there. So, I can only urge you to BW done asap....

Thabbo didn't end up needing a transfusion, because they were able to keep the damaged red blood cells from dying long and slow enough to protect his liver ... but his liver enzymes were through the roof for a while. :( It took two months until his liver values finally got back into the normal range and his red blood cell count went back to almost normal. We were really lucky, that Thabbo's Liver did not end up with major damage.

That's really scary. Glad he pulled through okay! I'm calling my vet to try and move her appointment up. Thank you!

Wow, so glad you shared and so glad that Tabbo is okay.

Hey Lucy, I just went back to revisit this thread and saw what Tabbo wrote about the onions. How is Candy? Please update as soon as you can. :bighug:

I am interested in an update as well! Hope everyting turned out well for your kitty!
Thanks for being concerned. Candy visits the vet this afternoon, I'll post the update as soon as I get home. When I spoke to the vet on the phone he didn't seem terribly worried, maybe because if she got any onion it would have been a very tiny bit, if she got any at all. But we'll see what's up when he can check her out!

Oh good, Lucy! I have been thinking about y'all! Looking forward to see how the visit went.

It certainly is! I was worried sick, especially after hearing about Thabbo's terrible experience. Poor Candy, she has no sense at all, she eats any- and everything. I watch her like a hawk but she still manages to eat weird stuff, usually of the non-food variety.
