im very confused. I know about fur shots, have had many since I started this three weeks ago. Watched videos, read up on everything and have been good at it now for a week and am much more confident and Tripp is kind of ok with this all so far. My problem is... Any where from about ten minutes after shot I smell insulin at injection site. It's not strong like a fur shot, that really smells like band aids but this is more of a faint smell of lantus and I don't smell if within first few minutes because I'm constantly sniffing his neck so I know injection was successful. My family thinks I'm nuts. I don't touch area at all just loving talk to him. But then about ten minutes after he's all done and jumps up on my lap, or meowing at my feet for more food I smell him and boom there it is. Not strong but enough to know its lantus. Can it ooze out? I have heard people who have to inject themselves have seen a bit ooze back out on their skin. Is it possible with cats? I just tested him six hours after am injection and it was 368. So I know somethings up but it wasn't a true fur shot like some I have had. When that happens you can smell him across room. He's up to 3 units twice a day. He is really skinny about 8 lbs so all skin and fur no fat. I inject on his scruff and over towards shoulder. I'm really confused.

3 units twice a day . 6am and 6pm. This has been dosage since Sunday. Prior to that 2 units twice a day. Pre shot am has been in high 200's midway 108 which was lowest to 368 today midday. Pre pm shot is anywhere from 291 up to 500. He gets 1/2 can of DM I'm am and pm. With some boiled chicken during the day because this cat is so hungry. But he wasn't a dry food cat before this. I had to order more strips for accutrak because so many got wasted with getting used to using and testing him. When I get them I'm going to test more often.

I'm using lantus. He only gets a piece of chicken like the size of a dice, maybe a bit bigger. That's it. I will do spread sheet. Have to wait for more testing strips to come. Just have two days worth left. Supposed to be in tomorrow from Amazon.

My cat always has an insulin smell at her injection areas too.the smallest amount can have a very powerful smell.

Hi Tripp,

The smell doesn't mean much... it can be dripping off the end when you make sure you're getting the dose right, it can be fur shots, it can be a lot of things. To rule out the fur shot, try another shooting method maybe?

I shoot differently now. I do the roll method. You grab a handful of hair, pull it up a bit and roll it back with your hand until you see a row of skin. Jab the syringe in ONLY when you can see skin. No more fur shots :D

I usually grab some skin and blow on the fur to part it good since hands are full but a lot of cats don't like to be blowed on.mine don't mind and are very easy going.it works for me really good haven't had a fur shot yet.pharm girl gave me some needles that are way too small 6mm so might get a fur shot eventually with these.im use to 8mm and thought they were small!
