Hello,
I just posted an introduction on the intro page. Now I have a food question. Megan has been on increasing levels of Lantus since diagnosis in August but her sugar is still not under control... obviously we are working with the vet on this.

Anyway, she gobbles up 2 substantial meals per day (Purina DM wet and FF wet). And she is still hungry ALL THE TIME. Seriously, she just tried to steal collard greens off my plate, she was that hungry! She gets very frustrated & grumpy and often lashes out at the other cats. We all try to eat on "her" schedule so as not to upset her even more. Does anyone have suggestions? Are there specific treats that might help her feel more satisfied between meals until we can get her sugar under control? Thanks, Anne

Hi Anne, welcome to FDMB!

My guys (even the non-diabetics) were hungry all the time, too, after I transitioned them over to canned food only. A couple of months ago I started adding frozen raw to their diet, and that has helped a lot. I seems to stay with them longer, or something, maybe satisfies them more. They have not been so frantically hungry since I started it.

Try adding water to her canned food...it helps fill them up as well as helping to keep their kidneys healthy

Another thing you can do is bake plain chicken, cut it up and give her snacks of that. It shouldn't effect her blood glucose and the extra protein will help

Have you tried feeding more frequently? I have to feed mine 4x a day to keep them from acting hungry all the time. Cats have metabolisms that are twice as fast as people, so they want to eat more frequently than we do. Bandit and Orpheus eat at 7am/7pm, and 1am/1pm. The extra meals don't have to be exactly 6 hours apart like that (we use auto-feeders with frozen canned food for the meals we aren't there), you can play around to fit them in your schedule. You just want to make sure you're not feeding at least 2 hours before shot time. And you can feed more than 4x a day if that work better for your schedule, too. Sometimes, I'll spilt their 7pm meal into two meals at 5pm and 9pm if I'm not going to be home at 7pm, rather than set the feeders.
