Hi! So a few weeks ago i switched my in remission kitty from the DM Savory Selects canned and the DM dry to Friskies Turkey & Giblets pate and EVO dry (just an FYI...dry kibble is only given very sparingly right before bed...a bag lasts me months) Anyway...he was loving the new food but the past few days...he has been very finicky with it. All of his other actions have been totally normal...drinking and peeing as usual and happy. Any idea why this thing with the food??

He's finicky with the Friskies or the Evo? Or both?

If it's the Friskies, it's probably just because he's bored with the same thing....cats like variety too! Any of the Friskies pate's are OK except the Mixed Grill which is just a little higher than we'd like (at 11% carbs)

Thank you! It seems to be both. He ate the DM for a year and never got bored. What other pates are good? The mixed grill? I dont want to give him any fish. If i put some dry in my hand he will eat it...but he is being finicky with that too! Wierd!!

No...the Mixed grill is higher in carbs than we like but any of the other flavors of Friskies (in Pate's) are fine....also 9 Lives pates and Fancy Feast Classics are low carb

It's OK to feed fish if you limit it to about once a week unless your cat has kidney disease (due to the high phosphorus)

If i put some dry in my hand he will eat it

When China's being finicky, I have to spoon feed her!! If I put it into a bowl she'll just walk away but if I sit there and hold the spoon for her, she'll eat it off the spoon!! Silly cats!!

Lol, I have to do the same thing with Squallie sometimes! Wonder why it's acceptable off the spoon but not from the dish? My personal theory is that it's a test; they want us to prove from time to time how much we love them, lol! :)

With the friskies, he pushes so much around on the plate and then walks away! I dont feed in a bowl because my Sonny boy would throw up alot after eating and the plate makes him take more time with his food

It's so frustrating, isn't it, when we're trying to do what's best for our sugar kitties but they don't want to "get with the program"!

Its just wierd because for 2 weeks he would eat it with no problem and i bought a case. I went to the store and bought a couple cans of the fancy feast pate to see if its just the friskies now, or some other problem. With the EVO dry, i put like half a teaspoon of water in with it and he ate it...maybe the pellets are too big or hard for him

My one civvie will only Purina one beef. She also will eat which is most of the time hill ideal balance grain free. So won't let anything else pass her lips. She will have times where she doesn't eat, so be it.

I have a civvie like that, too. She has IBD so she has to have expensive, novel protein food, and as soon as I decide she likes one and buy a quantity of it, it ceases to be at all palatable to her, lol! The only food I can guarantee she will eat is 9 Lives Meaty Chicken, which gives her diarrhea. :banghead:

@Barri ....Looks like you haven't learned the golden rule! Never buy a whole case of anything!!...LOL
My human bought me a whole case of my favorite food...Now I can't like it anymore.jpg

Im starting to think he eats a bit of the pate and then it gets to dry...he was used to the DM savory selects in gravy. Any suggestions on how to "gravy" the pate up?

If you're looking for cheap, available at big stores foods, you're pretty limited to the pates unless you want to feed a lot of fish.

Wellness foods come in large cans (12.5oz) and are "affordable"....available online at lots of places (Chewy.com being one of the cheaper) and at pet food stores but they're pates too I'm pretty sure

PetCo has a food they sell called "Soulistic in Gelee" that's like shredded meat that's not too expensive

So now he will eat the pate....out of the can! Crazy cat! I think i am going to cook some chicken today, cut it up and mix it with the pate so the food is chunky! I can give cooked chicken or turkey with no problems right?

Another option for you is Weruva, they are a little pricey but low carb. Here is the link so you can look at the carb values and decide for yourself. They are "chunky" so if you cat prefers pate style they may not work for you but do provide another option for you. It's also possible that your cat might have had stomach acid. You can give 1/4 tablet of a 10 mg famotidine (generic Pepcid AC from Walmart they are about $1 for 10 tablets). Here is the link for Weruva: http://www.weruva.com/truluxe-nutrition.php

So he likes when i put some boiled chicken mixed with the pate...i think it gives him the "chunks" he wants. I bought a can of the EVO chicken/turkey food and he seems to really like it! Of course it costs just as much as the DM perscription food :-( The can i bought from the store is the cat/kitten kind, but the type i find online is only the cat kind...seems the cat/kitten in the dark purple can isnt available online...does anyone know if there is any difference carb wise??

Did you try the Fancy Feast Chunky foods? If a little chunk is enough to get him eating, it's a lot cheaper!

I don't even see a canned cat/kitten that's made by Evo other than the dry, but most of the canned foods these days are for "all life stages"
