No phosphorous levels listed on the website, I'm afraid. Thanks for the suggestion jondoe - not sure I could "heartily" recommend as a CKD low phosphorus diet / replacement for Friskies Special Diet until I saw the As Fed or DMB values, including phosphorus. Ingredient list looks good for low carb, though!

This is the Turkey & Giblet

Ingredient:
Turkey Broth, Turkey, Chicken, Poultry Giblets, Dried Egg Product, Guar Gum, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Carrageenan, Minerals (Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Sodium Selenite, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Potassium Iodide), Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Niacin Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Folic Acid), Choline Chloride, Taurine.

Yes for sure. It's also been studied and can cause glucose intolerance, at least in mice. See article HERE.

There is another citing HERE as well, causing fasting hyperglycaemia in rats (in combination with a high fat diet).

Certaintly not the most desirable ingredient!

Hard to find many low carb foods without it as an ingredient, though. I do have a few types in Genghis' rotation that contain carrageenan. Wish I had more options!

I just checked and 9 Lives and Wellness have carrageenan, didn't see it mentioned on the Fancy Feast label. So, what are some low carb foods that don't have carrageenan?

I noticed that too and have been logging all the different foods I give Bubba to see if there is any GI issues with the carrageenan but, now @Brashworks mentioned the insulin resistance. Yikes, I have a case of Wellness.

Me too, it was my low phosphorus/low carb food that was affordable! And I just started Colin on 9 Lives this AM since it was cheaper than FF!

You'll have to check labels carefully if your cat is sensitive. You may be able to ID this by running a curve on a day feeding with carageenan and one on a day without it.
Otherwise, it may be a non-issue.

I looked back on my SS and do not see a difference in BG after Wellness. I will study it a more closely to make sure.

Bobbie, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to alarm you. The studies were done on humans and many pet food sites talk about carrageenan as a questionable ingredient. While I would prefer to feed something without, I've not seen any sensitivity in Genghis. As BJM has noted, you can see if your cat is sensitive by noting if it adversely affects Bubba's BG levels.

I am currently feeding a low carb Canadian food that does contain carrageenan and her numbers have mostly been under 140 so I think I am okay feeding it.

Again, sorry if it caused any alarm!

Thanks Melanie, I just looked over his SS and I am not seeing numbers raised after the Wellness but I am sure glad to be aware of it as a possible problem because who is to say that down the road he doesn't develop a sensitivity to it and I can be aware.

@Bobbie And Bubba , Whew, glad for that.

Not to hijack the thread, but how is he doing after his eye surgery? I haven't been on much but knew he'd had it and wasn't too happy about the cone of shame.

He is getting there. Saturday we can ditch the cone. He had a set back on Saturday when he got stuck under my mom's bed with it on and apparently thrashed around and caused the site to start to bleed some sigh.....so it set him back a bit. However, he looks remarkable for being one week! He's a great little patient and once the cone is gone I can evaluate how he is faring with a %40 vision loss. He wants to go back out badly. I am vacillating again as to whether I will let him again. The vet said he will be fine to be back out. I am shooting for quality of life. Thanks for asking.

I'm so glad he's on the mend, even with the setback. Isn't it amazing how tough they are?

My cats are all indoor all the time so I'm no use about the outside thing. We had a stray when I was a kid, Merlin, who was always trying to get outside - he had a lot of street smarts and would get out all the time. It's a tough decision when it seems to make Bubba happy to be outside.

So glad he's doing well.
