Question about weight

Squallie is a large-ish kitty who, before Dx, weighed around 14 lbs. This was probably a little heavier than optimum for a cat his size; he wasn't fat, but it wouldn't have hurt him to lose a pound, either.

Since his Dx and the diet changes we made, his weight has fluctuated from around 13 lbs back up to near 14, but he usually stays around the mid 13's. When he had this last UTI he lost a bit, he was down to 12lbs 12.2 oz. Now he is back up to 13 lbs 2.2oz, which I think is probably just about right for him. Squallie eats well, but he tends to fill up quickly, so I frequently have to encourage and temp him to eat the last bits of his meals.

My vet, however seems concerned about his weight, and wants to discuss the potential for putting him on famotidine and cyproheptadine. I don't really think he needs them, but if the vet thinks he does, I guess I'll give them a try.

My question is this: if we try these drugs and he stops needing/doesn't need them, will it be a problem for him to come off of them? And if he needs them later on will they still work properly for him, if he's been on and off them? (Actually, I guess I'm only asking about the cyproheptadine, I already know about the famotidine (Pepsid).

He seems to think Squallie is going to continue to lose weight, and that his appetite isn't what it should be. I don't really know why he thinks that, except that I told him sometimes Squall gets full before he finishes his entire meal.
 
hmmm, it seems like from what you said that when he has had an issue, he goes down, then he goes back up again. I am not familiar cyproheptadine and don't know what it is RX for. I would be inclined to keep weighing , daily for a week or so and see what is happening and go from there. If it's not broke don't fix it. But that's me....
 
Um, no. Doesn't really sound like an appy stimulant is really needed. Fluctuation in weight of a few ounces here and there really is no big issue. Weight loss in the pounds is an issue. If nothing else I would just keep some FortiFlora on hand or sprinkle grated parmesan cheese on Squallie's food if he doesn't seem overly interested. 1/4 tablet of 10 mg famotidine here and there won't hurt but don't need to stimulate the appetite of a cat whose weight is fairly consistent.

Thanks, Bobbie, that was pretty much my take on the situation, too, glad to have other opinions to back mine up! (BTW, cyproheptadine is an appetite stimulant) I whole-heartedly agree, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
 
If he maintains his weight in the 13's then I think that's okay. I would ask the vet what weight he thinks Squallie should be. Do you add a lot of water to his food? Sometimes kitties fill up on water if you add a lot to the food. So you could try a little less water and see if he eats the rest of his meal. Just a thought.

That's a good idea, then maybe add the water to the last little bit......
