Can max still have boiled chicken with having kidney disease.
He always liked it on his canned food .
Just wanted to no if it's ok for him.

I either bake a chicken breast in the oven with water in the pan. Or I boil it on the stove nothing add.
I just wanted to make sure. He is being picky not eating his fancy feast anymore.

Fancy Feast is a food we typically try to stay away from with kidney disease, the phosphorus content is too high. Cats with kidney disease have issues with rising phosphorus levels. Elevated phosphorus accelerates damage to the kidneys. I was just reading that a broiled, skinless chicken breast has almost 200 mg phosphorus in a 3 oz serving, whereas dark thigh meat has about 135 mg phosphorus per 3 oz serving. For kidney cats we like to keep the phosphorus under 200 mg per k/cal.

Please consider checking out this website to help you keep Max as healthy as possible: http://www.felinecrf.org/index.htm

Thank you for the info on chicken breast.
Max is not eating ff anymore. He is eating evo wet and wellness turkey.
Are there any treats or food that is safe for max to eat. For when he gives me a hard time with his food.

Hi Jeanne

I am also battling the same problems with Rosa - she's a diabetic in remission and now has CKD too! The Evo 95% Chicken and Turkey is a good choice, as is Wellness Grain Free Turkey. I also feed Wellness Core Beef, Venison and Lamb, Max Cat Chicken Supreme and Max Cat Savory Duck and I always keep a couple of cans of 9 Lives Tuna with Egg on hand for picky days - I can guarantee any cat that's being picky around here will eat Tuna! There are other foods you can give of course, but I've tried with quite a few of them and found that these are the ones that are most likely to be eaten so if Max is already eating 2 of the foods I give, it might be worth a try with the other ones that our cats like as it's possible they'll have similar tastes. :) Oh, and I still give small pieces of Pure Bites as a treat at medication time and Rosa's weekly test time just to help with her compliance - they're probably too high in phosphorus to give much of, but if it comes to weighing up the harm from a small piece against being able to give medication when you need to, on balance I think they're still worth giving in small amounts. :)

Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken is pretty low in phosphorus and has a consistency of shredded chicken...maybe you could give him a few spoonfuls of that as a treat instead of the boiled chicken if he likes it?

Thank you so much for more food ideals. After reading all those charts I swear I going to go crazy.
Going shopping tomorrow to look for your suggestions.
This is hard worrying about keeping him in remission. Now his kidneys. I feel just sick about this. I will do everything I can for my little love. It scares me me the thought of him not growing old I love him so. But I am praying we can keep him healthy as long as possible.

I just read the info in your signature - Max's story is so similar to Rosa's, even down to when the diabetes was diagnosed, how long he was on insulin and then the CKD showing up after remission. I too am scared for Rosa so I understand exactly how you feel - it's all about giving them as much quality of life as we can for as long as possible. And with you to look after all his needs, I'm sure Max is going to do very well - although vets seem to be fairly certain that the prognosis for CKD isn't all that great long term, there are cats who have been CKD for many years (the longest I've heard of is 10 years after diagnosis) so it really doesn't have to mean that there are only months left. :bighug:

My Gabby was diagnosed with CKD and in the 2 years before she passed, her Kidney values stayed normal eating a low phosphorus, canned commerical diet (Wellness Turkey, EVO, and Weruva). She passed from a stomach tumor, not CKD.

Bandit's new vet thinks he has early stage CKD, also. It's very common in older cats, especially if they ate dry food for a significant portion of their life like Bandit did. We're just keeping an eye on his (slightly elevated) Creatinine levels. Most cats over the age of 12 have some loss of kidney function, even if their bloodwork doesn't show it yet. He already eats lower phosphorus, low carb foods (Weruva & Wellness) so we're not really changing anything except mixing some extra water in with his food to make sure he stays good and hydrated. Kidneys work best when cats are well hydrated and eat high quality proteins-they don't have to work as hard.

As for his diabetes, he just went back off insulin yesterday, and we're gonna see how that takes. It's definitely possible for cats to have these two concurrant conditions and to stay healthy as long as they're well managed.

This chart is a bit better to look at because it lists the carbs, too: http://catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPhosphorus9-22-12.pdf

Here's a list of the foods I feed Bandit:

Wellness Core Beef, Venision & Lamb
Wellness Core Turkey, Chicken & Chicken Liver
Wellness Core Kitten
Weruva Paw Lickin Chicken
Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Chicken Frick-a-zee
Weruva Steak Frites

Thank you so much for more food info. Really helps a lot.
I read so much about kidney disease I cry myself to sleep. So I thank you for letting me here your story. It's helps alot. You really made me feel better. Thank you.

I just got the news today that my Harley (14.5 years old) has relapsed after 2.5 years off Insulin. He is heading to the vet tomorrow for his glucose curve and to get set up again for Insulin shots. We were lucky last time we only did insulin for 2 weeks before he went into remission.
4 months ago he was also diagnosed with CKD. But his bloodwork result today shows that his kidneys are functioning at normal levels (the vet doesn't understand that?!)

He's also been through hyperthyroid - we did the radioactive iodine treatment 1.5 years ago - all good there.

In February 2015 he had dental surgery and had 12 teeth removed - he's been like a brand new cat since then!

I hope that we are lucky enough to get him back into remission.

He is currently eating iams vet formula renal Wet food and mature consult dry food (1/4c)

I'm not looking forward to leaving him at the vet all day tomorrow but I know he will be in good hands!

Sometimes lab values can go screwy if a cat is dehydrated so that might be a possible factor to discuss with your vet. A few months ago one of the kitties here was very poorly and was initially diagnosed with kidney failure. A few weeks later her kidney values were normal. FWIW, I had a similar problem with Saoirse's liver values earlier this year.

Mogs! So good to see you back on the boards again! We've missed you, hope you and Saoirse are doing well! :bighug:

Sorry Jeanne, didn't mean to hijack your thread. I have read many accounts of CKD kitties doing very well and still being with us quite a few years after diagnosis, fingers and paws crossed for Max! :bighug:

Check to see what the carb count is for the food you are giving. Maybe it's over 10%? Here's a chart for you to look at The carb count is in the 3 column for the left . foodchart
