Murphy needs dosing advice tonight

Tried to link it, didn't work... It's ' Care Point u40 Pet Syringes. 3/10 cc 1/2" w/half unit markings'. Cost 11.84

I'm still thinking 1.5, but if you'd rather kind of ease Murphy in that direction with a 1.75 tonight, I think that would be ok ... but it's up to you. What's your own 'gut' saying to you?
@Robin&BB pmps was 318 - I drew up 1.5 but I suppose I could do 1.75 I have a few minutes before I need to shoot - your thoughts

well, I shot 1.5 -it's very difficult with those syringes though I am going to order the ones Sharon recommended
Sorry for the delay, Carol - my stupid ISP bombed on me; had to reboot! Yeah, that was fine that you shot the 1.5; I bet you'll be glad to get your hands on the ones like Sharon has, huh?:)

Verrry interesting. That PMPS, though pink, was a low pink. I'm super interested to see how 1.5 does.

@Rachel @Robin&BB me too -- thank you so much for your interest in this - if it wouldn't be for you two (and Sue) I'd still be giving him 3 units (and not being able to do the pmps) I ordered the new syringes so all should be good soon I'll get another reading tonight but tomorrow I'll be gone from 8:30 am until after 5 pm so no pokes tomorrow until the pmps :(

Well, Murphy's ears will thank you, right?;) And just think: You won't have to worry about being gone all day because that dose change wasn't an increase...:)

Murphy will be glad for a day off I'm sure. And heck...you might be too! We all need a break every now and then.

He is looking better, Carol. I hope you are able to rest up too.

How is the food situation? Is he interested in the version wet? If we could just find something he'd like to eat that was lower carb, I think it would really help with his numbers.

@Sue and Oliver (GA) - hope you are squeezing every last minute of fun out of your trip- Murphy LOVES the venison, but I am going slowly - he is getting 1/8 of a large can a day (split into two) I am working my way towards 1/4 can but I am hoping if I do it slowly enough, it will work without him getting sick. I am not sure he will ever be able to tolerate a whole can, but we'll see
his amps was 434 - we'll see how much the 1.5 units brings it down - again, thanks guys

Good Morning Carol. I had given Bubba and Forrest venison in the past; one thing I can say about it, the house stunk! Very gamey smelling... does it bother your nose? So glad that Murphy is tolerating it though! :)

@Bobbie And Bubba - I have the Royal Canin cans and I don't smell anything - the Young Again mature 0 carbs is another story - I put it in the freezer (both to maybe cut down on bacterial contamination and to see what happened to the smell) It did seem to help the awful smell of Young Again

Hi, Carol - Just peeked @ Murphy's SS while having my first :coffee::coffee: & - yippee! - see he's dropped about 100 pts. this a.m., as compared to yesterday's AMPS & PMPS.
So I have all my fingers & toes crossed ... :)

@Sharon14 - happy to see those pinks in Colin's SS - go Colin - hopefully the UTI will clear and his BG will fall - did you ever look in to the D-mannose? what about the slippery elm?

I'm planning a trip to the health food store to look into both supplements. I checked local pharmacies and they didn't have them. I want the SEB for me, and the D Mannose for Colin.

@Robin&BB @Rachel Now I am panicked with you leaving, Robin - Rachel, please tell me you will be around
I'm going to check Murphy's BS one more time at +10.5 but I am anticipating that it will not be very high judging from last two numbers around 100. Even if it is shootable around 200 don't you think 1.5 will be too much? I can't believe it got to the low 100s. I am thinking - unless the pmps is around 300, I am going to give him 1 unit

GO, Murphy ... GO, Murphy ... GO Murphy!!!:D

Keep in mind: These mid-cycle #s are blues, not greens, so ... I'd be inclined to go for a smaller redux - say, 1.25 if you can squeeze it somewhere in that neighborhood*? Appears he definitely needs a redux, but I'm thinking we might minimize any bouncing that way, considering that he's already had a big drop @ +8 from that pink AMPS. How does that sound - and can you monitor tonight?

*ETA: This, of course, is based on the assumption that he's up around 200 by PMPS - but there's 4 hours between that 109 & pre-shot time, so we'll hope!;)

well My thinking is that the #s are very close to a green - I read that with Alphatrak #s, you have to start getting nervous at 80 - so that makes me nervous to have him at 106 -If his pmps is in the high 200s, I'll give him a 1.25 (or a fat 1 with my syringes) If it is in the low 200s, I'd even be nervous to give him 1 unit I hate the pm dose and having to worry about hypoglycemia at night and then the question of what to give him tomorrow I am just shocked that his numbers are like this today - do you think his pancreas is healing and his requirements will go down every day?

Ok, I totally understand why you're nervous - can't blame you at all, as this is such a huge difference from only 3 days back! (I'm one of those who never gets much shut-eye at night anyway, so forget that there are actually people who do sleep...;) (more in the next post)

This would be ok, too - it's important that you feel comfortable with what you're doing - especially overnight. You're on Central Time, right? So what time (at your time) is PMPS?

@Robin&BB @Rachel - So0000 the pmps was 326 almost exactly the amps - what a nice smile curve that was today - almost perfect, really
regardless, I think I am going to give him a fat 1 tonight (my equivalent of a 1.25 units) Would that be okay?

I think that'll do fine, Carol - will save you worry overnight. Always good to get some decent rest!

I agree completely. You NEED rest (we all do after all) and that dose should keep him safe.

What beautiful mid cycle numbers! I'm excited to see what happens tomorrow.

Also as a reminder...I'm around here about 5:15ish (Central Time) in the mornings. At least during the week. Not sure what tie your AMPS is, but if it's around then, I'll be here!

I will probably be closer to 6 am Central time tomorrow - I guess the question is - if amps in 300s give him fat 1? if in 200s, skinny 1? if he bounces or is the 400s- still fat one?

I'll be here 6 CT. I usually leave for work around 6:30.

I do think what you've laid out there is a good plan.

Carol, wonderful!!!!!! This is so awesome. Wow, so it looks like his dose was too high!! And look at those blues. This is sooooooo exciting!!! I can't wait to see what you get tomorrow!!!!! Are you smiling right now, Carol!!???

I'm not really sure, Carol. It's possible his pancreas is stuttering into life. Let's get a few more cycles in and see if we can figure out what's going on. :)

Yep, I'd say probably would be good to try it that way. 'Cause you can always bump it up a wee bit more later on down the road if his mid cycle #s start creeping up, you know?:)

Robin let's hope he's still in blues when you return
Surely you know I won't be able to resist sneaking a peek at his SS whenever I can ... Is he feeling better, allergy-wise, with that switch to Zyrtec? (Out here it's not the ragweed; it's the controlled burns that they're doing in the Nat'l. Forest that surrounds this town. (Way too much smoke wafting through the air - thank goodness it rained a bit when that storm came through this afternoon.)

yes and no regarding the allergies - unfortunately, ragweed probably won't decrease until the first snow
I used to live in Colorado -are the aspen leaves all beautiful yellow or off the trees by now? I remember the smoke from those fires - intense! Really miss those mountains

Carol, my guess about his improving numbers.
We have 2 kinds of incoming diabetic cats here.

1.The first need a diet change and then they rapidly drop with the addition of insulin and are OTJ in a matter of weeks.

2. The other group needs a couple months for the insulin and diet to start changing their numbers.

It is frustrating for the second group to see the first do so well. But it is that awful ECID thing.

I think Murphy is the second group. He is gradually improving. His progress is also complicated by his diet which is improving with the addition of the novel proteins wet food, but he still has dry higher carb keeping his numbers up a little. I would expect (but certainly he could surprise us) him to continue gradually lower , have a few bumps but improve overall (anti jinx)

I know it is scary when others aren't around to help you figure out the dose. But truthfully, you are getting good at doing that. And when you really aren't sure, go with the lower choice. You are getting good at looking back and using your data to determine a good dose.

And that's my Pep talk for today. Well, today my time. It's midnight your time.

And Carol, I'd start a new thread daily with your amps and/or pmps and ask. That will help us find you when you need help.

Yep, I'm with Sue. Back when I had Gypsy, I used to post a daily condo with AM and PM numbers (and any mid cycles). I'd ask for advice constantly. Eventually, though, I'd start posting and say "I think this dose" and ask what others thought. They usually agreed. The thing is, you know your cat. I was able to figure out dosing for Gypsy more easily because I knew her...I spent time looking over hr SS and figured out what worked for HER whether it made sense for other kitties or not...and gradually I was more able to handle her dosing on my own. You're all getting there too. :)

This is not to say we aren't here, but with all the vacations going on, remember to trust yourself. I'll be around and happy to help out, but just remember that you are doing fabulous.
