I'm so bummed, Goof tested at 311 this morning, called the vet, he recommended 1u. I checked him 30 min later, down to 279. Had to leave for work and won't be ble to test again until around 5:30 pm. I don't understand it, he's only been getting Evo canned food, less than 2 carbs. I've always added about 5-6 kernels of Evo dry, to get him to eat, as hates canned food. On Oct 2 he was 74. What the hell?

Sorry to hear this, Tammy; I know how disappointing it is when you suddenly see a number like that. I guess when you test tonight you'll see whether this was just some weird blip or not. Is it at all possible that Goof is developing a UTI? Or needs his teeth checked? As either of these can cause BG's to spike ...

Fingers and paws crossed that this was just some weird anomaly and Goof will be back in good numbers tonight or tomorrow!

Thanks guys, unfortunately, he was at 250 tonite, gave 1 unit. :( He actually had a dental and full bloodwork up on 9/25. He had on extraction so he was supposed to have antibiotics, but it made him sick each time I gave it, so vet said to discontinue it and to watch for infection. I looked in his mouth tonite, looks a little red in there. I gave him the AB! In half doses over 5 minutes, he didn't vommit. So maybe .....

I know right? I just feel heartbroken, not as bad as the day we got the diagnosis, but sad nonetheless.

Did he have post dental x-rays done on the day of the dental?
All too often a tiny fragment of tooth or bone can be "left in there" which can cause irritation and/or possibly infection. We've seen it happen enough times to routinely suggest having x-rays done after extractions.

Will keep my fingers crossed that you just discovered a piece of this puzzle, and that Goof will tolerate the AB at those smaller doses. Good detective work there, Tammy!:bighug:

Yup, he did.

Dang, 311 this morning. I'm thinking the insulin is bad, will get new stuff today if the vet has it in stock. I may also have to get some ketone strips to test for that now. :banghead:

Oh Tammy I'm so sorry. Hopefully it's just due to a minor dental infection. Paws crossed. Which insulin do you use, btw?

That's a really good point. Happens with human extractions often too, unfortunately.

So very sorry, Tammy, hoping this is just a little "refresher " that Goof needed. The leftover root fragment that Jill & Alex mentioned is a very good suggestion. Interesting that he is back on the juice this soon after the extraction. Worth looking into.

Just read that he did have post dental xrays........ I would think that there should not be any redness around the extraction site at 11 days post operative. Might be worth a call back to see what the vet says. The mouth heals so quickly.

He also has some little pink blister type sores on his lips. He had them prior to the dental, they went away after, but now they're back. He's never tolerated antibiotics well so I wasn't able to give it as prescribed. Just picked up the new insulin so we'll see what that does.

Got it. Hopefully the new prozinc will help. If he's high tomorrow morning, it could be a bounce from the insulin, but let us know how he's doing tomorrow.
