I posted on Health too. This morning at 4:30 AM EST, Bubba jumped down off the bed and hacked up a small hairball the size of a nickel. When he jumped back up on the bed, his stomach was making squeaking and gurgling sounds. Of course, I didn't get back to sleep. At 6:00 I test him and he is at 582! He has never been that high before. I checked the litter box and there is diarrhea. He ate fine, wanted to go out, but momma said "NO"! and he seems fine otherwise. Aggravated because I won't let him out.

The only other experience I have with that squeaking noise was with my dog when she had gastritis. I had to give her an extra small snack before bedtime and Pepcid for a while. If this was gastritis or an IBD episode, (which the vet suspected before that he has IBD) would it cause the numbers to jump like this? The night before last he was in the greens and now the blacks!??? Yikes, can't feel good.
 
Oh no! Poor Bubba...I guess he doesn't feel very good.

I'd think that IBD or gastritis could cause higher numbers. Heck, the hairball could have caused them too. Generally, anything can affect numbers (which makes life super fun). Any chance he ate something that made him feel off? The diarrhea and hairball make me think that maybe his body is trying to get rid of something funky he ate...and that could raise his numbers. Let's see where the numbers go today.

I wouldn't worry too much, Bobbie. (I know I know...if it was ME I'd be pacing the floor and possibly wringing my hands) but seriously. Remember this is just ONE number, and at least you know he wasn't feeling well already, so that's probably what caused it to be so high. Hopefully he'll settle down today and tonight be back in normal ranges.

Thanks, Rachel, you are right, it is just one number but one really BIG number, LOL. Hopefully, it runs it's course and he feels better ASAP.
 
Oh, Bubba!!! I'm so sorry he's causing you worry this morning! I don't have any advice, but just wanted to say that we're sending you good vibes this morning and hoping that Bubba's tummy settles down soon!

Thanks so much. At +2 he had dropped down to 420 and I'm getting ready to do a +4. Sigh....
 
When my guy has GI problems, I see a rise in his numbers. Pain/discomfort=stress=higher BG seems to be the pattern. Sorry Bubba isn't feeling well. These things can be isolated incidents, tho.

I am hoping it is an isolated incident. I'm starting to think worms. As he was smacking his lips before he jumped down and hacked up the tiny hairball and he has had diarrhea 3 times so far today.....He has an appetite though!
 
Sorry to hear Bubba's still not feeling well. I've given Sam baby food when he's had a GI issue that hung around for more than one round. It seemed to help calm his tummy. I've also read to give pumpkin, but I'm not sure about that one since it's also used to treat constipation. Can it be good for both? Anyway, hope he feels better soon!

Thanks Djamila! I give him pumpkin 1 tbsp. in each meal it does help with constipation and diarrhea. And I have read that it is good for diabetes. I am so hoping he gets better ASAP. He could have gotten into something outside that didn't agree with him, like maybe a bad mouse???

I was just about to ask you if you've wormed him. Since he hunts, he could be coming in contact with them. Wouldn't hurt to worm him. Is he doing better?
 
Poor Bubba...a double whammy. Looks like the insulin is lowering the numbers well; almost a yellow today. You might want to make sure that he is getting enough water because you don't want him also to get dehydrated. Just something to think about since he has diarrhea.

Thanks, he has been drinking like crazy today and peeing. His PMPS was 208. Go figure, AM 582 to 208. He's killing me.

I know, and look again, he's at 95@ +3!!!! Think I am going to steer him with a little food or it will be a loooooong night. I'm wondering if the diarrhea can cause his numbers to go down?
 
I would bet being sick could cause all kinds of wacky things to happen. Especially since he's sick somewhere in his GI tract which is responsible for absorbing nutrients - which is directly connected to how the rest of the body responds. So it could probably make him go high or low or both in the same day (as you've seen today).

Has he stopped with the diarrhea yet? Is he drinking enough to stay hydrated? Hope he's better soon!

As of about two and half hours ago he had a tiny bit in he box. This morning he was drinking a lot and peeing a lot. Drinking slowing down. Think I put some in front of him.
 
@Bobbie And Bubba - Given that he dropped to 50 in tonight's cycle, I'd say you probably want to reduce the dose a bit in the morning. Either 2.2 if you're feeling adventurous, or even 2.0 if you're feeling really nervous. Keep in mind that 50 is the start of the concern-zone on a human meter (but then, on the other hand, there can be a 20% +/- variance). Will you be around to monitor in the day cycle?
 
Thanks Robin for looking at his SS. It was quite the ride yesterday, from 582 to 50! I will be around to monitor. Hope no funny stuff today as I am super tired. It is 5:45 Am and I am up as he had diarrhea again... After I test in 10 minutes, I will decide how adventurous I want to be. Fun, fun :bighug:
 
Woah Mr. Bubba! Look at you dropping! I think your dose was good...looks like he bounced for this morning's AMPS...though of course it's Bubba, so who really knows?

I'm thinking if the diarrhea stays around, may want to call the vet. I'm not saying anything is wrong, but I hate that he doesn't feel well and they may be able to suggest something to help out. Or maybe a probiotic like forti flora to see if that helps out? Make sure you check his skin for dehydration (tent and see if it snaps back).

On a side note, I hereby issue the following instruction: GO TAKE A NAP. You deserve it. :bighug:
 
Thanks Rachel, yes, I am going to go back to bed soon. I did speak to the vet and he said if it continues into today, he'd like to put him on an antibiotic for 3-4 days, starts with a M, can't remember what it is. Does any one have any experience with antibiotics for diarrhea? I will take in a stool sample to rule out worms.
 
Hmmm...never heard of an AB for diarrhea. I'm a bit skeptical about that. Often, being on an AB can CAUSE diarrhea since it kills all the good bacteria that helps keep them...ahem...regular. Maybe do a post on Health to see if anyone has heard of it? Just to get some opinions...
 
Metronidazole? Sam was on that once for diarrhea. The vet said it also reduces intestinal inflammation, so he was on it more for that than for the AB effect. 250mg tablet, but cut into 1/4 and I had to give him 1/4 tablet twice/day. Sooooo much fun to convince my wild kitty to swallow a pill :-( It seemed to help, but I always wonder if things like that really help, or if he would have been better on his own anyway. Regardless, his diarrhea cleared up and he seemed to feel better.

I'm so sorry to hear he's still not feeling well. Keep us posted on how he's doing today!
 
Hope Bubba feels better soon and that you are taking a nap right now! I feel for you, still having issues here, even one of my civvies has diarrhea now. I think it might be the wet food diet, maybe, or worms, maybe. I am putting pumpkin in all the kitties food, each meal and hope that helps. Rupert's was somewhat better than last week, more like pudding and it was pure liquid for a few days. His numbers are higher too. Making sure to add more water to his food for dehydration. I bought some worm medicine, but it warns against giving it, if the adult cat has not been tested for heartworms. Guess it can kill the heartworms and clog the heart. None of mine have been tested and they were exposed to mosquitos before I adopted them. I can't afford to have them all tested and I have to treat all of them or it won't help. *sigh* They were dewormed when kittens at the vet, but they did catch a few mice in the house in South Dakota, so could have got re-infested. I am at a impasse here. :( Guess I will check to see if any vets are a little cheaper. Last time I took my civvie in, it was over $600!!!! :eek:

Thanks Robin! They seem to feel ok, just having that issue, but still have good appetites and act normal. Trying different food now, was using Special Kitty, which seemed fine for a couple of weeks, but trying 9 Lives now. I could give civvies Friskies, but the carbs are a little too high for Rupert, so gets more confusing when feeding. Oh well, I have to supervise feeding time anyway, so it wouldn't matter. Thanks again for the healing vibes! :bighug:
 
Also, since I think i remember you saying you have trouble with pills, ask them about Profender wormer. It gets all worms and you apply it on the back of the neck, like Advantage.
 
I have heard of that, I believe the vet used that when they were kittens. It would be so much easier and yes, they do NOT like pills! lol I have tried it in their food and they usually won't eat it either. Maybe it's not so expensive as it was back then. Thanks for the tip, I will ask about it!
 
Hi Djamilla, he is doing better. I had my homeopath give me two remedies for him, he started last night. This Am there was form to his bowel movement, like soft serve ice cream. He still wants to go outside but momma is being tough. Breaks my heart cause it has been 70 sunny and just beautiful fall days the last few days. How Samir doing?
 
The wonderful little sandwich ziploc always works well. Turn it inside out with your hands in it like a glove. Pick up the sample, hold on to it and turn it right side out again and lock it in.
 
Hope Bubba is doing better - Murphy is also having low pmps numbers the past two days - it's like his insulin is lasting longer than 12 hours - I'm really struggling with what dose to give him in the pm - do you think the dose you gave him the night he went to 50 was too high, or was it the diarrhea causing his to go haywire? I know we're not supposed to give insulin when the pre shot is <200, but I am completely confused about what to do then How are you judging the pm dose?

I do think it was the diarrhea causing him to not absorb the insulin properly. The 582 number the morning it started is no doubt the pain he was in, if you could have heard his stomach and he kept repositioning himself on the bed as to trying to get comfortable.

His shot number is a little lower now ( 180) than Murphy's as he's been on insulin longer and I have more data as to how he drops. Right now I have scaled him back some because of the 50 reading he got the 10/6/15. He seems to hold on to his insulin longer too but not every cycle. Like last night his PMPS was a bit lower than his +9 so I reduced a bit more as well because, frankly, I need to go to bed early knowing that I would have to get up at +6 to test him. It is difficult to judge sometimes Carol. There have been times that I thought I just didn't know what I was doing BUT, in my defense, Bubba is not making this easy for me as he changes his patterns with the wind. So, to answer you question, sometimes just go with past data and your gut. When you know you can't monitor a lower number, shoot conservatively.
