I sprinkle it around outside too. Also rub it all over the bodies of the older cats because I don't use advantage on them. I put it on them outside and leave them out for a bit, since it's so messy. It's great in the chicken coop too! I used to eat it myself, but haven't in awhile.
When using the diatomaceous earth on the cats, do you use the food grade kind? I read somewhere that was the one to use on the cats themselves. The lower grade one is fine for the yard, etc. Also, how do you make that flea trap? I need some! I am using Advantage II on all cats, they only go out on the lanai, I flea comb them and still am getting fleas. Not horrible, but they are on them! One bit my ankle the other day and they have a bite for such a little thing!

I use the food grade kind everywhere because of my cats being in the yard . And yes, only human grade on the cats because of them preening themselves. I HATE fleas. Once summer they almost made me become unglued it was such a bad year. I use Natural Defense by Sentry. It's all oils and smell good, strong, but good, peppermint, cloves, lemongrass. I get it online. Maybe you could use it inbetween doses of the Advantage. The natural won't sterilize the females, but it does detract and kills them.

Yes, I too use the food grade DE. The flea traps I buy at the local feed store, but they are available on line. They are Victor Ultimate Flea Traps. I've seen on line where people make traps using a nite light and a bowl of soapy water underneath it, but my cats run all over the place spilling water bowls already so I don't want to add any extra!

I've been enjoying this thread! Thanks, Sue, for starting it.

One of my Dad's favorite sayings - "Eat what the cook puts on the table." My sister and I were pretty picky eaters as kids :joyful:
We've been lucky with fleas the last couple years. Mitz is indoor only but used to get fleas from our old dog. Our current dogs haven't had any luckily but we do use NexGuard every other month or so. I'm so glad there's finally an edible version but I think it's only for dogs.

I read somewhere that cats can be extremely sensitive to essential oils and that they should be avoided. I don't have time to find the link at the moment but I'll try to post it here later.

Thanks for all the great info everyone! I am going to make my own flea trap on the lanai, after I bring the kitties all in. I read that fleas hate citrus and some rub lemon on the fur, but cats also hate citrus, many cat repellents are citrus based, so not sure I want to use that. I will check out the Victor flea traps and the Natural Defense, might help keep some of the buggers off!

Thanks for the link Joan! Just read on one site that apple cider vinegar acts as a natural repellent, think I will try that one for sure. I set my homemade trap tonight on the lanai, hope I catch some tonight! (or not..that would be even better lol)
