Cat girl

My 12 yr old baby girl started showing diabetes symptoms in the last 2 months tried calling vets to get a price on a diabetes test but they couldn't give price and said they would have to run other tests etc.so I bought a relion meter.i took her blood sugar and it was 539!!:nailbiting::(That seems awfully high!i also bought a different food grain free high in protein.after eating that food today her bg is 415 still high but better.how and when am I suppose to do blood glucose testing?after eating or empty stomach?im planning on taking these readings in to vet and having them do the diabetic tests and get her on insulin.also checked for ketone in urine and so far none.im hoping I'm doing this all correctly.i tested my other cat sable also 12 yrs old and her blood glucose was 54.o_O

Hi There and sorry about your suspicions with your kittie. Normal Blood Glucose is 60 -120, so your kittie is high. If your cat was on insulin, we would suggest to test before feeding, feed and then shoot the insulin. Your vet is also going to want to check for ketones especially because your cat is high. You can get Ketone strips at the pharmacy and test her yourself. If Ketones are present you need to have her seen by your Vet ASAP .Was the 539 within 2 hours of feeding her because that would make the number higher. Get a test 2 hours before or 2 hours after she has eaten to get a truer value. The good news is, you are a step ahead by testing and wanting to change kittie's food to something lower carb, 10% carbs or lower. Dry food is high is carbs so you will want to switch to can food. Here is a link for you to find a can food that is lower carb.

After you get an insulin for her, please check back in so we can guide you further.

I have bought some urine ketone strips and tested her and thankfully no ketones.i have 9 lives canned food I give their joint meds in and trying to switch them to canned but will take awhile so bought a better dry food.soure simply nourish grain free.they love dry food (addicted lol)so going to try the plan on here to get them over to canned.just after the switch to the new better dry food her bg came down to 415.

Oh and yes that 539 was after she ate that purina diet food I had them on.she has lost a lot of weight drinking over 2cups of water a day.urinating a lot and I noticed her breath smelled different like a sweetish floral smell not the stinky fish breath I'm use too.lol

Okay, the sweetish smell is most likely ketones in her urine. I am really glad you mentioned that. You are going to want to get her to the vet ASAP because it can be potentially dangerous. So, please get her to the vet asap, tell them about your testing and numbers and the sweet smell on her breath. DKA in cats can be potentially deadly and can come on very very quickly. Here's a link for you to read about it.

A friend of mine had a cat that was perfect one day and very very sick the next. The problem was the cat was diabetic and she did not know and there were ketones in the urine. It was a few days hospital stay to rehydrate the cat and get him stable. Please don't mess around with this.......
ETA:
I just reread that you have tested for ketones, but from what you are saying, it really sounds like there are ketones in her urine.

I would keep checking for ketones in her urine if she were my cat until you can have her seen by the vet. I did not mean to be an alarmist; I just want you to be well informed.

Ok thank you very very much.going to be getting her in tomorrow.will keep checking urine.will keep an update on vet visit etc.

Is there anything else I can do?i have been feeding 1/4 cup of dry food at 4-5pm and another 1/4 cup at 4-5am and trying to get her into wet food more in between these times.i need to read the plan you guys have more.before I joined it was this site that helped me decide to get a meter and start changing their food.im glad I found this site:bighug:She just had surgery on her eyes in January for entropion and her sugar was 175.this came on her so fast!i have been worrying myself sick lol

Hi Cat Girl, it's good that you are checking your cats glucose and for ketones, as well as transitioning her food to low carb canned food. Make sure you keep testing her glucose as you change food because once off the high carb dry food her levels may drop drastically. BTW what's your and your kitty's names?

Boy, do I know about worrying myself sick. And I am glad I found this site too. Everyone is so committed to helping our kitties get better. What is your name by the way? When she had the surgery on her eyes, did she get put on a steroid by any chance?

My name is Beth and she had her eye surgery in January of this year.she wasn't put on steroids but had to put many different kinds of drops in her eyes.one was made out of dogs blood lol.i wasn't happy about the pain meds they prescribed her.onsior which is aspirin.an antibiotic, atropine, corneal drops.i don't think any of those are steroid drops.

The reason I asked that because steroids can bring on diabetes in cats.

They are always belly up somewhere.lol
Yes both are 12.i have very strange cats.one is obsessed with plastic and begs me to take a plastic jug and rub her all over with it and tap it all over her.they rather eat fruit and veggies than meat.im starting to wonder about them.maybe I made them crazy with my craziness.lol

You're doing fine!
Just read you have like 15 cats.my mom has around 20 cats and many other animals too.she use to work at the humane society and is always taking in strays.seems like when one get old and passes another shows up to take its place.

You have such a beautiful fluffy cat.i just noticed one eye looks different and it looks really pretty.
Every one comments on how cool that eye looks but, unfortunately, that eye needs to be removed due to possible cancer. It appears to be Iris Melanoma. We found this out 2 weeks after his diabetes diagnosis. So, I understand when you said worrying yourself sick. I wanted so badly to get his diabetes regulated, which as of right now he is not, before we go into that surgery. But, we might not be able to do that. The sooner the better for the eye removal. Since he just had dental surgery, teeth cleaned and two teeth extracted, a full blood work was done to the tune of 265 bucks just for the blood work. So, I would like to be able to take advantage of the recentness of that blood work as to not have it repeated. I am leaning towards late Oct for the surgery...........He will then just look like he is winking all the time as the eyelids will be sewn shut. I keep telling myself that he is going to look cute and pick up a lot of chic cats. LOL

Sorry about Bubba's eye, Bobbie, but he'll be fine and of course still cute! I had a one eyed cat once and after a bit didn't even notice it. My cat, Eli, didn't miss a step either, kept hunting, climbing trees etc. I think these things are much harder on us then on them!

Bobbie, I'm so sorry to here about Bubba's eye, I had no idea he had a problem with it! I hope you can get him in for surgery soon and that it will be hugely successful. He will look adorable; maybe secretly he is a pirate! The girls will be fighting over him and his dashing good looks!:bighug:

I had a feeling you were going to say something bad is wrong with his eye.he will do great.miss kitty almost lost her eyes to that entropion.before her surgery I had a mini surgery done to help her eyes heal faster by having her 3rd eyelid sown over her eyes for 2wks.she couldn't see at all but she remembered where everything was and adjusted fast.she even jumped on and off the couch!i was so surprised by that.when she could see again she was so happy and even was watching tv!lol

Miss kitty has always weighed 19-20lbs but still has tons of baggy skin hanging off of her belly etc like she lost a lot of weight.she is like a flying squirrel cat.lol
Oh when you guys get a chance tell me a little about yourselves and your fur babies.

Thanks Lucy, as if diabetes wasn't enough, right? I appreciate you good wishes.

Thanks Sharon and that is exactly what the vet says. What happened to your cat's eye?

I'm not sure, he came to me that way. He used to live in a house by a stop sign on my way to the boarding stable, and I saw him most days. One day one of the homeowners was out and Eli was trying to get some attention from him. He looked like he was about to kick him, so I honked my horn and gave him the look and he walked away. A few weeks later I noticed they had moved and I didn't see Eli thought it was strange they had taken him with them. Then I got a call from the shelter the neighbors had brought him in. His eye was infected from an injury. So I went and picked him up.

That makes me sick to my stomach to think that someone would harm an animal or anyone for that matter. What is wrong with people?? That is assuming that is what happened to him. Could have been that Eli got into a fight, but there would be scratches to tell that story. My friend knew of a dog with one eye and said he looked cute, like he was winking.

Yes we have no idea what happened to his eye could have been a fight it just takes one claw to the eye, so may not be any other marks. When I was a kid, I had a dog with an eye removed too. She was a cocker and after it was healed, her fur grew back and covered it so you couldn't see it, but she looked fine. You love them no matter what. If diabetes doesn't scare you off, nothing will!

Great minds think alike. I was just thinking about Beth and Miss Kitty, wondering how she made out at the vets. Post when you can Beth.
Couldn't get miss kitty in til today and I got a vet out of the few that work at the place I go to who was a money hungry b!$@$!:mad:She made it seem like miss kitty needed so many organ test etc like she is on her death bed and I told them I could only afford blood glucose test today and get her on insulin if she needs it.she is diabetic for sure.vet got really short when I wouldn't give in and let her do tests.couldnt afford $260.00.paid $83 for visit and bg test.then get to pharm could hrs later and they forgot to call it in.i call them and get them to get it in and then pharm couldn't fill it cause person who fills the insulin pen things isn't there til Monday.i call vet and she is all snidely.she said miss kitty would be fine a few days without insulin on special diet.she just contradicted herself!why does she need all those tests then?im not sure what insulin it was.it is a 12hr insulin that comes in a pen you draw it from.???she got so short after I said no to tests that she never said what insulin it was and I had to keep asking her what to do with it etc.im switching vets for sure.i would like a cheaper insulin.if it is animal insulin I shouldn't need a script to get it.she wouldn't call in a bottle cause she didn't think I could pull 1/2 unit.that she didn't want to start out miss kitty on 1unit.first she was going to put her on 1 then changed her mind.

Hey, could it be Lantus because I believe that comes in a pen. And she wanted to start her on 1/2 unit and didn't think you could draw up 1/2 unit? Is that correct?

Yeah.i thought it was preloaded pens but it is a pen of insulin I pull from???if I still have to pull it I'm doing the same thing.i don't understand what she is talking about lol

Hi Beth, I answered you on one of your other threads too. Have you gotten Miss Kitty on the low carb food-pate type canned food only no gravy? This would be a good time to do that. The change in food alone can help lower her glucose significantly. Many of us use Fancy Feast Classic or Friskies Pates. Make sure you keep testing her for ketones. Did your vet check for that? That's the most important thing for now. I don't know where you live, but I live in a small town and thought I'd have to go to the next town to fill mine, I got lucky, but try that. If not, take a deep breath, change her food and get the insulin 1st thing Mon AM. Keep us posted.
