Until I learn how to test, ....can you tell me if this feeding schedule looks OK...while I'm away for 3 nights?
since feeding raises blood glucose levels... Ollie is very hungry and very thirsty...

9 AM 2 units Pro Zinc plus 2.5 mg prednisolone (vet has an alternative to pred, but i'm afraid to try it)
2 cans (5.5. oz each) (Instinct, Tikki Cat chicken or Weruba chicken - Soulstice)

3 PM 2 cans + 1 Zobaline B12 tab

9PM 2 units Pro Zinc plus 2.5 mg. prednisolone
2 cans

(I'm afraid to leave him less than 2 cans per feeding, since the feedings are spaced 6 hours apart) and i don't want him to get hungry.

11 PM overnight cat sitter comes to sleep with Ollie - she will feed him on demand, probably every 4 hours or so (1/2 can per feeding) She leaves at 7AM

He LOVES the Tikki Cat 'succulent chicken' - it was on the CatInfo. website - low carb.
but mostly i feed him the Natures Variety (Instinct) grain free - about 10% crude protein. I water it down for him. I'm afraid to give him too much of the high protein/low carb, for fear of kidney disease.
He has significant muscle wasting, so I am not sure how to rebuild his muscle. He's bony - spine and his back bone shows. His stomach is full however...

When i return, I plan to take him to the vet and ask him about testing at home, and if i can raise the insulin
by .25 to see if that helps. From what i understand, raising it can help reduce the amount of food he needs and help him gain weight and stop muscle wasting ? The vet is the best cat only vet in town, -- what if he says not to raise his insulin without his permission ? I don't understand about ketones. I think he had ketones one time i took him to the ER the week before the collapsed lung (last week). His lung healed on its own overnight, according to the vet. He's standing and grooming now, which he has not done in a long time. But i would like to put some weight on his bony body. (his stomach is the only place he has weight)
I know it's the pred, but wish there was an alternative, because he needs it to breathe... he has coughing without it. The alternative the vet offered has been used on dogs, and i'm just afraid to try a new drug on him. Need to get the name of that drug.

Very nice looking cat. Siamese or sphinx? You will receive a lot of information here but we need more to be able to offer suggestions.

How old is he? When was he diagnosed as diabetic? What kind of insulin are you using? Why on prednisone? Any other health issues?

Thanks, Sorry, out of time to pack -
Can you check my posts for more info. on Ollie from yesterday on the introduction page and this forum ?
Yes, he has a history of elevated pancreas PLI -forgot the name of the test... pancreatitis - he's had that in the past.. but he's OK now.
he's 12 - Burmese probably - found him & his sister 12 yrs. ago and bottle fed. diagnosed this past Dec. '14.
On Pro Zinc. on pred. for 10 years due to previous pneumothorax in '05 when he was 2. - had to have a chest tube back then.
without pred. he would cough and not be able to breathe. tried reducing dose to 2.5 mg. once daily when he was diagnosed in Dec., but unfortunately he coughed and had breathing problems. he's currently on 2.5 mg. twice daily.
I have 4 other cats. Thanks so much for writing.

nature's variety isn't too high. low carbs for cat is 10% or less.
all the nature's variety instinct cans are low. and pretty good for ckd.
3% - Nature's variety Instinct Grain free Chicken – 302
3% - Nature's Variety Instinct Grain free Beef – 248
2% - Nature's Variety Instinct Grain free Lamb 262
1% - Nature's Variety Instinct Grain free Duck 191
0% - Nature's Variety Instinct Grain free Venison 330
? - Nature's Variety Instinct Grain free Rabbit ?

Thank you for the carb content of the Natures Variety ! your black & white kitty looks like my Tabor who died in '08. tuxedo kitties are so wonderful.

forgot to say, --- he's on 2 units Pro Zinc twice daily.
