Now that I'm testing...now what?

Hi all!
I just started testing Harry yesterday and he has had pretty high numbers towards the end of the day. I wasn't able to get a test before my bedtime because it's an hour after I feed him and give him his shot. I shoot at 7am and 7pm. He's on Novolin so I test him, feed him, wait 20min and then shoot. So I didn't want to test him so close to when he ate. This morning at AMPS he was at 319.
So my question is- how do I configure out how much dosage to give him based on his numbers. Should I test at +2 or +4? Is there somewhere I can learn more about this info? Any input is appreciated! Thanks

That way others can see the BGs and time they were taken.

For N/NPH it peaks at about 4-5 hours so yo want one about then and then at +2

Hopefully your are using Novilin N.
Novolin is Novo Nordisk's trade name for a family of Recombinant DNA origin insulins. They include N (sometimes called NPH), and R (very fast actions) and mixture of the two. Only N/NPH is OK, but not that good, for cats.

Thanks Larry! I have a spreadsheet set up, and attached to my signature. We're you able to see it? Just asking because I had a hard time doing it with a tablet. Yes, he's on Novolin N. I know it's really harsh but I wanted to get him used to testing before I change his insulin.
 
Hi Ericka,

Cindi said you would be posting. As you have already seen, there are few (if any) members here using N. We don't have a guide for using it like we do for the other insulins. It is often harsh - dropping the cat early in the cycle - and doesn't usually last more than 8 hours. That seems to be what you are seeing. If you see that he drops at +2/3, sometimes a little bit of food then will help flatten out the curve. But using the N is going to mean you are working hard to get it to work and it is still not likely to give you nice lower numbers. There are just inherent difficulties using it. One is that upping the dose because the numbers are too high can mean a harsher faster drop.


Is it possible for you to get another milder longer lasting insulin like Lantus, Levemir or ProZinc? It would be so much easier for him and for you. It is important to get started with a good insulin as soon as possible to give him the best possible chance at regulation/remission.

Thanks for your advice! Yes, his number were/ are so high. Nearing 500 towards the end of the night and at PMPS. What you're saying all makes sense, and I already have a vet apt -with a new vet, tomorrow to get a different insulin. Crossing my fingers!!! Thanks!!
