I took CJ in for blood work. Since her home BG #'s have been great (averaging between 60's to 90's), I figured her results at the vet would be a little higher but not terribly so. Imagine my surprise when I got the results: 256.
Ok, 256 isn't too bad. CJ has had much higher #'s at the vet in the past, #'s over 475. Interestingly, she got the same exact high #'s over 475 on two different days at different times with the second reading while fasting (not recommended).
But, remember the #'s I've been getting at home.
I gave CJ calming chews that usually relax her but this time they clearly had no effect whatsoever on her. I arrived at the vet with a cat shaped like a bowling ball and rabbit ears pulled back. In other words: STRESSED.
It didn't help that she was in a waiting line for over 30 minutes with a bunch of barking dogs to get blood drawn.
Fortunately, I home test. snd fortunately my vet now supports home testing. I showed the vet my BG logs and there was no disagreements or lectures over the difference in vet #'s vs my #'s. No unnecessary stress for me.
So, for those who do not home test, are afraid to, and rely solely on vet glucose readings to determine insulin dosing, be aware of how much of a difference home testing makes.
As for CJ, her home reading a few hours after her vet visit: 87. She was happy to be home.
