just got a young cat....
she was tested two weeks ago for FIV.... it was negative.

Shouldn't you test a cat again 6 months later to make sure?

I thought there was a window of time where they can have it but still test negative.....
 
You want a retest after 6 months of age, to reduce the chance that maternal antibodies are causing the test to be positive.
And even if positive, an FIV+ cat can live a fairly long life if kept indoors and away from exposures to infectious disease. If you interact with other cats outside the home, washing and changing before interacting with your FIV+ cat will minimize the chances of exposure to infectious agents.
