Testing glucose curve before insulin?

Hello,

We haven't started my baby on insulin yet, but i was wondering, is it alright to do a 12 hr curve test to get a baseline before we start on insulin? I won't be able to attend the next appointment, (husbands going) but i was wondering that if we did this then it's possible o be more informed before the appointment on Monday.

I see no reason for a full curve but it would be useful to get a fasting BG (right before eating and then say 3 and 6 hours after eating.

There's nothing wrong with it though not really necessary I don't think if you have to pay to do it at the vet. Are you guys going to be home testing? Will literally save your thousands and is practically required to properly treat FD :)

Definitely going with home testing. Juliet is pretty hard to work with outside her comfort zone. Honestly, at this point in time im more worried about her legs. I have ordered the zobaline but it won't get here until next week. But I'm much calmer now and with the pain killers the vet gave us, she's moving better and the grumpy attitude is back. :-))

I believe so, but the dr is convinced it's arthritis or a blood clot complication. I think the meds are helping with the arthritis but I'm pretty sure it's neuropathy. She's more active but the "walking" still looks like cats who have the same problem. And while she uses the litterbox, she'll avoid it until she absolutely has to because she can't move right. So definitely more worried about that.

Hmm thankfully I have no experience with that aspect of diabetes. Good luck to you guys you're 100% on the right track by feeding wet food and home testing.

If she had a blood clot to a leg, she would be in severe pain (as in howling in pain, its that bad) and the limb or limbs would feel colder, due to lack of circulation. With diabetes, the excessive urination may unbalance the electrolytes, such as potassium. This can cause difficulty standing and walking, too.

It might be, if blood work supports the need. If potassium is given when not needed, it can be harmful.

She had a full blood work up and potassium levels were fine including, thank goodness, her keytones and kidneys. Drs concerned about blood clot or arthritis due to muscle loss in legs and his inability to feel a pulse in hind legs. I saw her play for the first time in a week tonight.:bighug: the massive pain meds she's getting right now seem to be helping with pain, but the walking is worrying. I ordered zobaline but it won't get here for a week. Is there anything else i can give her in the meantime while waiting? Im going to buy a glucose Meter tomorrow so though she's not getting insulin now, start a baseline and get some practice in. Also curious to see how the diet change may have effected her levels. As of wedensday 500+. We immediately changed diet to low carb fancy feast and she's loved that. I think it's helped a lot. She doesn't eat it all right away and it looks like her drinking has even evened out.:)

Inability to feel a pulse and massive pain meds supports the blood clot diagnosis. Blood clots cut off the blood supply to tissues further out on the limb, which causes pain, and nerve damage. No wonder she's having trouble walking, and that wouldn't necessarily be due to diabetes.
In case they didn't tell you, she has about a 50/50 chance of throwing another clot within 10 months if that is what happened. When/how was that diagnosed?
Is she on any kind of blood thinner? Fish oil (also good for arthritis)? Discuss this with the vet.

She's had the full work which included x-rays and blood. 500+ was blood sugar count at the time. She does have the symptoms of diabetes after reviewing the past actions she's taken. I had kinda wondered why she wanted to lick out the bathtub when we keep a water fountain for the pets. He believed that the clot might be in the spine though apparently even with an mri you might not see a clot anyway?. Drs really good at taking it slow, pain meds were to diagnose if it was just the arthritis or the clot he believes it to be if i remember correctly. If improvement was not shown, we are supposed to give 1 baby aspirin per 48 hours for12 days. She's more energetic after 3 days on the meds and she even played with a rubber band last night, but the walking is still really off. I still have my doubts about the clot so many things point to neuropathy but Dr kind of dismissed that concern last visit. But, he also seemed to think that just because Juliet is grumpy and uncooperative i wouldn't want to deal with it and first thing he suggested was to put her down. I was near hysterics at the time, i nearly three up when he mentioned that. I feel much better and more empowered after finding this sight and all the research and learning I've been doing and everyone's wonderful support.

I went through similar when the vet at the practice where Saoirse was diagnosed thought, prior to her ultrasound, that she might have something more serious wrong and maybe only had months to live. I could feel all my blood draining into my ankles. If I hadn't promptly sat down I think I would have fainted.

Sending you some extra big :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:.
