Dry food is just plain bad

I find it so crazy after all these years of having cats and dogs that dry food is so horrible for our animals.

My cat Riley had inflammatory bowel disease so bad that he had diarrhea for 6 weeks straight.

He was on antibiotics hardcore the whole time that cost me like $800 just for that medication. Not to mention bringing down his poor immune system.

Then we had dose after dose of steroid injections that led to his terrible episode of diabetes which almost killed him.

The only change I did with his food was switch to expensive prescription diet. I did not give him soft food (was not offered) only dry and his situation got worse and worse.

Now Riley has been eating 90% wet food and his blood glucose numbers have been from 90-130 which is awesome compared to 600+ is what he was when he went into the hospital.

The big kicker that gets me is now that his steroid injection wore off the only time he gets diarrhea is when mommy gives in and gives him a few pieces of dry food!!

Now I'm wondering all along if we would have just switched him over to soft food to begin with when we found out he had inflammatory bowel disease we could have skipped all of those steroid injections, antibiotics and the episode of the diabetes with the 150.00 Prozinc!!!!

I did go ahead and order the budesonide just in case I'm wrong but so far this is what it seems to be, so I'm just going to have to really work hard and try not to give him any dry food.

Dana, what wet food are you feeding? If it's a novel protein (a protein he's never had before), that could have done the trick to make him feel better. Is Riley OTJ? Congrats on those great numbers.

Well I've been giving him a little bit of this and a little bit of that I don't think novel protein although I did buy duck one time.
Mostly Fancy Feast and some grain-free beyond and Friskies all pate style. I do have some of the DM prescription diet that dr. Todd gave me but I'm not using that as much because it still has higher carbs. 14%.

Riley has not had a insulin injection in probably two weeks.

Riley never was a real big soft food cat, he always licked off the gravy off of the turkey and cheese friskies, but now that I don't buy that he's really picky it's hard to get him to eat it but he breaks down and eat some. I have to add water to it to make a gravy for him to lick anything out.

Go, Riley! That's great!

Does he still have diarrhea? Amazing if the food switch is all it took. I'm still trying to get Marshmallow to eat wet food.

Now he doesn't have diarrhea right now actually it's the opposite which is crazy I really think that the soft food is the answer. I'm trying not to get too excited about it though because just my luck that It will come back full force.

IBD kitties seem to vacillate between having diarrhea and being constipated. Marshmallow had diarrhea for 4 months and then all of a sudden it switched to constipation and now (with vet approval) I give her Miralax daily. I just ordered some new probiotics that are supposed to help regulate things. I would love to not have to give her laxatives if the probiotics help even things out.

Dry cat is not necessarily bad; but, the where and the how of it's storage can be. The fat content of dry food goes rancid when exposed to high temperatures. I initially made the mistake of storing it in my garage...which is not climate controlled. My cats also got sick and required care and antibiotics. I store my dry food in sealed cans in the pantry off of my kitchen. All has been well since doing so. Good luck from Jane and Stewey

I think I might try some of that young again, I don't know, I've read other post that their cats have gotten really sick and diarrhea from it?

Rapid food transitions, or the novelty of a new food causing scarf 'n' barf, can both happen with a new food. We suggest a slow transition of 20-25% different food per day to reduce the chances of that. If the feces seem a bit soft, adding a probiotic or a teaspoon or two of plain canned pumpkin or squash may help.

My cats have never been sick from it...i dunno, every cat is different.
My cats started on it June 16th. It is not their primary food, as I give them Fancy Feast and Wellness can also. The first 2-3 days, they had soft serve stools, just like the owner of the company told me they would and then it stopped and they were fine. My sugar baby and civvie both love it!
