Questions about keytones & constipation

Vegetable had to go to the vet today cause she really wasn't feeling well. I tested her urinebtjis morning & it was positive for keytones. How long does it take to develop keytones?

My next question is about constipation. The vet said veg is constipated & he wanted to give her an enema. My first reaction to the enema was no cause I figure it would be to hard on her system after getting blood & urine tests along with a trip to the vet, plus I read about giving her some pumpkin. So my question is should I let the vet give her an enema & then continue with some pumpkin regularily at home or should I decline the enema & start the pumpkin right away as soon as she gets home?

I'm so confused & worried right now.

I did try to find the supplies to give veg some sub q fluids last night but unfortunately the community pharmacies don't carry the supplies & since it's a long weekend here the specialty pharmacies/medical supply stores are all closed until tomorrow. That's now on my list to get to get this week to have on hand in case something like this happens again.

I replied on the other thread. Low potassium is usually the cause for constipation in DKA cats. Ask them to test for it and get a supplement. The vet should be able to provide you with all the supplies you need for home care. I made you a list on your other thread.

How long does it take to develop keytones?

I can't answer fully as to how long it takes for them to start being produced. I do know that ketones can show up in blood tests days before they appear in the urine. Going forward I think it would be a good idea to get a blood ketone meter (works like a glucometer) so that you can keep a closer eye on Vegetable for ketones in the future - a sort of early warning system.

@Critter Mom i will definitely look into the blood keytone meter. I'll add it to my list. A blood meter will be much easier to get a sample from vegetable then the urine sticks, she's a bit of a brat when it comes to getting urine samples. Can the monitors be picked up at most pharmacies or does it have to come from the vet clinic?

I've seen them advertised on ebay over here. I think Novamax is a popular brand. I'd have a scout online, or maybe ADW do them. Note: the test strips aren't cheap, but presumably you don't need to use as many.

I have similar pee sample issues with Saoirse.

In as little as 2 weeks of insufficient insulin or insufficient food causing fat breakdown, ketones may start developing.

All of the pharmacies around my house didn't have the blood ketone meter and strips in stock, but when I asked (and you have to ask) most of them said they could get them in a day.
