She's definitely eating/drinking/being her normal happy self. The teeth are terrible, I'm sure they're worse then they look too. I hope everything gets cleared up as efficiently as possible regarding dental treatment. I tried to do it months ago and they said no because her numbers but it seems more critical now.

I'm gonna start her at 10pm tonight on the shot and slowly get her down to an earlier time so I can test her on the PM cycle more reliably. 1am tests are hard. I live in Los Angeles and it's definitely hot. I fill her food bowl up with water and she likes drinking anyway. Home-testing for dehydration seems fine (skin pull, eye whiteness, etc.).

Thanks so much.

And the liver values might just reflect the state she was in after months of not being regulated. This can cause temporary elevated liver enzymes due to the poor nutrition and fat breakdown. Hopefully the next set of labs will show improvement. Try to get a copy of them if you can.

Good to know. I will, thank you.

If you are testing with a ketone meter, the reading you are getting is not a worrisome number.
Given that numbers above about 2.55 on a Precision Xtra is where you need to be concerned about ketones, the 0.9 is small and reliable.
Sienne nailed it! Readings less than around 2.5 are not worrisome. However, I would say they bear watching and becoming proactive if an upwards trend is seen.

"It may seem like ketones have a bad reputation since we've seen so many problems occur with DKA but ketones are actually used by the body everyday to provide energy to some primary body organs like the heart and can be used as an alternate energy source when glucose is lacking. They also help reserve the glucose supply for those organs that prefer it like the brain. They can be found at normal basal levels in blood and urine. When we talk about losing weight and burning fat, we are actually talking about using ketones. Dieters and people stranded in the wilderness rely on ketones to survive."

When do ketones show up on a blood ketone meter such as the Nova Max Plus or Precision Xtra meters?

The latest studies in cats indicate ketones will begin to show up at readings of 2.4 and 2.55 on a blood ketone meter:

I've added some links to basic ketone info in the Ketones, Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), and Blood Ketone Meters sticky:

That's very interesting. Is there a chance she has no ketones whatsoever or is this more of a 'trace' level and a warning? She was 2.1 mmol/L awhile ago then we got fluids an went to .4 mmol/L. I had never heard this information. Thank you.

Lol I already know way more then I wanted to know trust me! :) That's enlightening though. I thought any reading was cause for trouble! So basically Luna's #'s are indicating TRACE amounts? Thanks.

If you're ever looking for some reading DKA/ketone material, do a search for Hope + (((Baby)))GA's posts. Hope has dealt with ketones and DKA and knows more about them than anyone I know on this board.

What a weird day. +7.5 she's 256. 220 point drop today. Was I freaking out over ketone #'s for no reason basically? We just paid $200 in fluids to flush ketones! Lol. I will check into Baby's posts. We had a kitty named Baby and lost her to the horribleness of FIP :(

Freaking out for no reason? No. You have a ketone prone cat. Every bit of info you gather is helpful and will aid you when making decisions.

Make sure you're refreshing your computer between posts. I've left the feline study with blood ketone meters info in a thread of yours once before. I think you may have missed it...

I probably did sorry. Sometime's I get flooded (which is great but I can miss things). A lot to take in!

The fact that you had ketones, and they -increased- significantly after you first detected them was really where the cause for concern was. Combined with the weight loss over the past year, that could have turned into a dangerous situation pretty quickly. Catching this at around 2 on a blood meter or trace on a urine stick and reacting is the best method for preventing complications.
