How Much Pumpkin for Diarrhea

Hannah seems to have some dental issues, so her vet put her on Clavamox for two weeks and we're looking into a possible, upcoming dental. On day two of the antibiotic, she developed severe diarrhea that just kept getting worse, so he pulled the antibiotic and told me to start giving her a packet of FortiFlora, daily. He plans to start her on Orbax, but only when the diarrhea ceases. It's now been two days since we stopped the Clavamox, and the diarrhea continues. I've read that giving plain, canned pumpkin can add fiber and help control the diarrhea, so we just started that, a few minutes ago. Woo hoo... and knock on wood... but she likes the pumpkin (at least for now). My question is, how much pumpkin should I give her each day? And, if it's going to work, how long will it be before we notice any improvement?

Awwww! Little Hannah's got sore tooty-pegs! :(

If the pumpkin and probiotic don't work, you might be able to ask your vet if something like Pro-Kolin is available in your corner of the world. It's a paste containing probiotics and kaolin (the latter can help firm things up).

Irish vernacular, Carole. ;)
I love your descriptive way of talking and thinking! Makes me smile! So glad to see you back on the message board, Áine. You have so much to offer and we miss you when you take a break.
How are you both keeping?
We're doing pretty good... at least we were doing pretty good, right up until last week when he hit a pothole in "Progress Road". Little Hannah, as you call her, has shown me that she's one, tough little cookie! She never ceases to amaze me.

FYI, just in case someone else wonders how long it takes the combo of FortiFlora and canned pumpkin to kick in... In Hannah's situation, it took about 1 to 2 days. Yesterday, there was a soft-but-formed poop in the cat pan. This morning, there was a solid, normal poop. Woo hoo! :cat:

Carole - how much pumpkin did you give each day? And did you give little Hannah a full sachet of Fortiflora each day?
.

Fortiflora has never worked for Marshmallow's stomach. Purina actually took the word "probiotics" off the box recently. I don't know what they're marketing it as nowadays... But pumpkin seems to work wonders for a lot of cats! Glad it worked for Hannah too! I give Marshmallow 1 tsp every night to keep things normal in the litterbox. :)

Hannah is anorexic and we have a terrible time getting her to eat since the transition to wet food, well over a year ago. We now have her on Cyroheptadine as an appetite stimulant. However, in the beginning, before the Cypro, so many folks here recommended the FortiFlora, I thought it was just what we were looking for... an answer to our prayers, so to speak. But it wasn't. She never liked it and it never enticed her to eat. It worked for others, but not for us. The new box I acquired on Saturday doesn't contain the word "probiotics", anywhere. It does say, "Feline Nutritional Supplement -- Patent Pending. Contains a source of live (viable) naturally occurring microorganisms." It also says, "Contains guaranteed amounts of live active cultures." For the diarrhea, my vote, like yours, goes to the pumpkin!

Thank you both for sharing your experiences using pumpkin and also how much you feed. With Saoirse's meds (or possibly diabetic gastroparesis) she needs a little bit of help in the poop department at the moment as they're a little bit on the firm and dry side.

I ordered Rapid Care GI from Dr Fosters and Smith. Works great to restore GI tract after antibodics. Has vet consider Metrondizaloe ?

No, he put Hannah on Orbax, with no resulting problems. And the pumpkin worked great, so why go with meds? However, thanks for the suggestions. I'm always open to what works for others.
