Blitzen's dental is on the 7th, is there anything I should pick up for when he comes home?
I'm not sure what to expect that day and for the days after. Will he be in pain if no teeth are pulled ?
Will he need pain meds if a tooth is pulled? Antibiotics? Will he need a special diet?
Any info you can share would be great.

Hi Robin.

He'll need a bland, easily digestible food. Vets normally send kitties home with Hill's a/d or similar, but that might not be a good option carb-wise. Saoirse couldn't do the a/d (for BG and pancreatitis reasons) so my vet said it was OK to feed her very finely minced poached chicken and broth - small meals. Your vet will be able to give you some guidance and hopefully other members might be able to recommend other food options.

Your vet will probably prescribe pain relief. I asked for Saoirse not to be given Metacam. Our vet prescribed some bupe. The bupe and the anaesthesia/sedation meds can cause constipation. Maybe ask your vet to give you something to have on hand should this be a problem. (Saoirse had to have some liquid paraffin to get her bowel moving again - after 3 poop-free DAYS!!!!).

I'm not sure but I think our vet may have given Saoirse a Convenia injection (despite my express wish for her not to be given Convenia) but I could be wrong. (PTSD - memory issues).

None of my vets ever gave/said to use A/D. The just said soft food. If they only ate dry then soak to soften it.
My OTJ Dulce had a dental on the 7th. I think four teeth were extracted. He came home with 7 days of Clavamox. He was given a shot SR Buprenorphine SR means Sustained Release and lats for three days.
Typically antibiotics are not given when only a cleaning is performed.
I was told to only feed maybe half normal the evening after the dental and the next morning. Then even Dulcle did not even finish that which is not unexpected. Sometimes a cat will eat little or none the evening after the dental.
Sometime the cat is very lethargic the evening of the dental. That usually depends upon the induction drug given. The induction drug is what is used to initially sedate the cats so the endrotracheal tube can in inserted into the windpipe to administer the gas anesthesia with oxygen.
Some vets still use ketimine with other drugs. My vets now use Propofol (Diprivan) which makes recovery easier

Pumpkin or a very small dose of Miralax can be useful in treating constipation, if it occurs. A/D would not be a good low carb choice; it is over 10% in carbs. Plus, there's no reason to buy expensive prescription food.

Robin, you can also ask your vet about the possibility of getting one of those injections that reverses the anaesthetic. If it can be used, the cat doesn't spend as long under anaesthesia.

Do you know the name of the injection that reverses the effects of anesthesia?

Ok thanks.
I will inquire about what anesthesia they use and about Buprenorphine I kind of figured a soft diet because of tenderness to the mouth. I'm doing my best to not stress about him going, I need to stop thinking so much....he will be fine.
Thanks again folks❤️

Been there. Actually I went through it twice when Saoirse went for dental work earlier this year. I settled her in at the vets and reluctantly went home. I wasn't in the door an hour when the vetty beans called me to come and collect her. I don't know what they did to trigger it but apparently she threw a major eppy after I left. Had to go through all the pre-dental angst all over again 2 weeks later.

((((Robin))))

Fingers and paws crossed in the Shire that all shall be well.

Not all induction drugs have a reversing drug. Each reversing agent is specific to the induction drug used.
Ask the vet what pre-anesthesia drugs, induction drug(s) and anesthesia will be used.
Typically the anesthesia will be either servoflorane or isoflurane gas with oxygen)

Marshmallow had a cleaning today. The vet didn't give me any feeding instructions today (and he didn't in the past either for previous dental work, but she's never had any teeth pulled). She's at her bowl enjoying a snack right now. She refuses to eat wet food but I guess her teeth don't hurt because she's crunching away on Evo.... :)
